- Episode 26: Delicious Forms of Local Cuisine
“Hey, I’m from the same hometown as Soujirou. Nice to meet you.”
“Ah, thank you very much.”
Mystia, who came to bed covered in drool from Matsukaze, faced Chigusa once again.
“It’s amazing that there are two guests from another world at the same time, which is unusual. They’re really cute. Their clothes are different, but it’s nice. I guess Chigusa is strong too?”
“Ah, the sunshine is dazzling…!”
At first I wasn’t sure what would happen, but it looks like they’ll get along well.
It was good, it was good.
Then Mystia came back, so I started working on what I had prepared.
“Hey, Soujiro! I was surprised to see such a nice hut!”
Mystia’s eyes lit up as she pointed to the two that were completed and the third that was still being made.
“Oh, it’s a new bed.”
“Really!? As always, you do amazing things in the blink of an eye!”
“It’s not quite there yet. I’d like to be able to put things near the ceiling and increase storage space.”
I just tried to get some sleep quickly.
“Hmm, it looks like you have a lot of ambitions. I’m looking forward to it!”
“Well, it looks like there’s still a lot of work that can be done. I’d like you to help me again when I have a big job like relocating an old hut.”
“Leave me alone!”
Mystia answered with a smile that shines like the sun.
It’s worth the effort to see someone so happy.
“Wow, even the first one is beautifully finished! Hiroi!”
“I made it bigger than the previous hut, and I thought it would feel like a room with this much space.”
“Yeah, yeah, I get it!”
Inside the hut, there was only a bed and table that could normally be folded up.
Make hinges out of wood and firmly attach the top plate to the wall. When you want to use it, just lift the board and extend the legs on the back so that you can hang it against the wall.
When not in use, it can be hung on the wall, so in that state the inside of the hut is about the same size as three tatami mats.
“The fact that the floor is made of wood also makes it feel like it has evolved!”
“It’s so smooth that you can sleep on it, and the flooring is thick so it has an insulating effect. This should keep you from getting a bit cold…Well, it looks like it’s going to get hot for a while from now on.”
“I guess it’s fine. It won’t go to waste. But can I ask you something?”
“It’s good, but?”
“Why did you both take off your shoes?”
“Ah……”
“eh……”
Chikusa and I took off our shoes in front of the entrance.
“…It’s a habit.”
The new hut was raised off the ground with a foundation, so stones were placed at the entrance. So I took it off.
Habits are scary.
“My brother was taking his clothes off, so I thought he was forbidden to wear them…”
“Dokin? I don’t know, but I’m going to take my clothes off too.”
“No, it’s totally fine.”
“Eh, are we left out? That’s not a good thing.”
“No, it’s presumptuous to ban soil even though Sanwa soil isn’t even made.”
“Commitment…”
Chigusa laughed a little.
“I understand. Japanese has something to do with this, right?”
“Ah, that’s a hit.”
When Mystia said this, Chigusa nodded deeply.
When the third hut was completed, I said, “Let’s decide who will use which one.” Guide to! ” Mystia started to say something like that, so we decided to go around each hut one by one.
Every time Mystia says things like, “What’s going on under this hut?” or “It was quick even though the roof is high!”, Chigusa and I explain things to her.
Gradually, Chigusa started talking more and more topics, such as how Matsukaze got on top of her while she was working and tried to do something about it.
…Come to think of it, this hut is also a “result of work” for Chigusa.
I thought that I was making them work, but maybe Chigusa also found joy in making them.
That’s what I felt when I saw Chigusa happily talking about the time she started construction while looking up at the ceiling.
Well, now that everyone is here, we can prepare the time-consuming dishes.
I kept filling the pot with water and throwing it away.
“What are you doing?”
“Mystia, Chigusa actually gave me the oil.”
What Chigusa gave me was plenty of vegetable oil. It’s olive oil.
I’m so grateful.
There are bears and wild boars, so it’s not like there’s no oil.
However, vegetable oil is useful for cooking and other purposes. Unlike animal fat, it doesn’t solidify at room temperature, and it has a mild scent, making it easy to use.
Liquids require containers to carry, and are heavy and bulky.
When I bought the paint, I had given up on buying a lot of oil and bringing it home.
However, for Chigusa, who can use magic, it was an item that was easy to carry because it did not rot.
That’s why I received a large amount of oil.
“So, I thought I’d make my local cuisine. It’s really delicious.”
“…Did you go out of your way to wait for me to come back?”
“of course”
“Huh? Heh, I understand. I’m looking forward to it!”
Mystia made an expectant face, just as she had said.
Her beautiful eyes sparkle, and she has an expression that lifts your spirits just by looking at her.
Mystia’s face looks very natural and certain.
“By the way, why did Chigusa have so much oil?”
“I can’t cook, so…”
Chigusa said with a gloomy face.
Even though no one was angry, for some reason she looked like she had already done something bad.
Chigusa also has this kind of face as a role model.
“If you can’t cook, is it oil?”
“Oh, that’s right. If you catch fish and put it in boiling oil, you can make it into a dish… Wow…”
That doesn’t make it into a dish.
“That’s what comedians used to do on old TV.”
“Well, I was doing it on YouTube…”
“What?” “What?”
Generation gap.
“I saw it too. Soujiro will do it, right? Show me, show me.”
“No, that’s not it. It’s similar though.”
What I was making in a pot was starch.
Grate plants that contain a lot of starch, wrap them in a cloth, and squeeze them several times inside.
Then, the water becomes very cloudy.
The cloudiness is plant powder. Wait until the powder settles, then discard only the dirty water, being careful not to throw away the settled powder.
As you repeat this, only the dirt will be washed away and only white powder will remain.
And the white stuff that remains is starch powder – so-called potato starch.
We also do it in school classes.
By the way, the representative starchy plants are potatoes.
And if there are wild plants like potatoes that store nutrients in their roots and produce scales, you can probably get starch from them.
I used to find wildflowers like that with Ukatama.
It’s a wildflower that looks similar to turmeric. When you pull it out, there are scales attached to the roots.
If you ask Mystia to make starch in a pot and dry it using magic, potato starch will be ready.
The rest is meat that has been marinated and brined in advance.
A solution in which salt and sugar are dissolved in water is called a brine solution. Marinating meat in this will make it soft and juicy. You can also add flavor by adding spices and herbs.
Rabbit meat with a plump texture. Bear fillet meat has a rich fatty taste. And the fillet of wild boar, which is higher quality than domestic pork.
I checked the ingredients in the brine and found that I had all the ingredients.
Oil, potato starch, meat.
It’s like you’ve already decided on the local cuisine to make with it.
――This is fried Tatsuta.
“Oh, it’s delicious…!”
Mystia took a bite, making a crunchy sound, and her eyes widened in surprise.
“Fried chicken…!!”
No, that’s fried Tatsuta――Chigusa was crying with such force that even the uncool tsukkomi was frightened.
Satisfied with their reactions, I too enjoyed the feel of the crispy fried batter and the taste of the special meat.
The crunchy texture feels like it’s going to burst in your mouth, and the sweetness of the meat juices and oil overflows from inside. The more you chew, the more you’ll be filled with pleasure and flavor.
“This texture… it’s irresistible…”
Even though it shouldn’t be that far removed from modern Japanese cuisine, I felt nostalgic for the first time in a while.
Well, I used to eat fried chicken about twice a week.
Seasoned with only salt and potato starch, similar to fried chicken.
Despite this, the reason why it stimulates the taste buds so much is because the batter absorbs the aroma and taste of the frying oil.
Enjoy the texture of the crispy batter as you bite into it.
Every time you bite into the fibers of the meat, the juices and oil burst into your mouth, giving you a visceral pleasure.
Ah, this is really delicious. The best.
The bulbous scales in the soup were soft and delicious.
“It’s really delicious! It’s all thanks to Chigusa. Thank you!”
“Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeess karaage….I’m giving you the karaage for the first time in three years…phew…”
“Maybe you can’t hear me…Well, I kind of understand how you feel.”
My vocabulary may be blown away after eating fried chicken for the first time in three years.
Everyone was so excited that they were running around under the table getting hit by matsukaze.
It’s dangerous, it’s dangerous. Let’s calm down.
“…<Craft Gear>”
I just had an idea.
Pick up a branch and use a knife to carve it into a thin stick.
“Chigusa, yes this is it.”
When Chigusa saw what I held out to her, she impulsively jumped up and screamed.
“Ah…!!!?!? Fried chicken – skewers…!?”
It’s just three pieces of fried chicken on a skewer.
It doesn’t make any sense, but since I’m Japanese, I find meaning in it.
“My brother is a god…!!”
Chigusa, who received the karaage skewer, looked at it and muttered.
You should guess what high school students think about fried chicken skewers for the first time in three years.
“Is it a god when I skewer it? Can I do it too?”
Mystia is trying to imitate.
“No, um, I wonder what it is. It’s hard to explain.”
“? Ah, I see. This has something to do with Ohashi, right?”
“No, it’s not there.”
“Byaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!
Then, all three of them were able to fit all of the piles of fried Tatsuta they made.
