- Chapter 9 - The Father Of The Child
Before she stood Gu Beiting, bearing two large shopping bags, a slight sheen of perspiration gracing his forehead.
Old Zhao stepped forward to relieve him of the bags, and Gu Beiting instructed, “Please take these to Young Madam’s room.”
With a respectful nod, Old Zhao complied and departed.
As Gu Beiting approached Su Shu, he offered an explanation, “I bought some things for you that you might find useful.”
Su Shu’s eyes widened in astonishment, resembling dark grapes.
“Mr. Gu, you went out specifically to buy things for me?”
He nodded thoughtfully, “I had intended to take you with me so you could choose what you liked, but I was concerned that it might tire you. After all, in the early stages of pregnancy, it’s essential to exercise particular caution.”
Listening to his considerate words, a wave of warmth swept through Su Shu’s heart.
“Mr. Gu, you are truly attentive,” she praised, her voice sincere.
Gu Beiting’s expression softened as he replied, “This is what I should do. I am the baby’s father, as well as your husband.”
His words held an enchanting power, drawing Su Shu’s gaze to his face, where admiration and surprise mingled.
This man, so handsome and caring, was far from the inflexible figure Aunt Zhou had described.
In truth, he exuded a gentleness akin to the tender caress of a spring breeze.
When lunch was ready, Aunt Zhou entered to invite them to the dining room.
The table was adorned with four dishes and a steaming soup, all beautifully presented and aromatic.
Yet, as Su Shu approached, a tumultuous wave of nausea roiled within her stomach.
She quickly clamped a hand over her mouth and made a hasty retreat toward the restroom.
Gu Beiting’s expression shifted immediately, and he hurried after her.
Inside the bathroom, the sound of her dry heaves echoed distressingly against the walls.
“May I come in?” he knocked gently.
After a particularly intense bout, Su Shu finally managed to respond, “Mr. Gu, you don’t need to come in. I’ll be out shortly.”
Just as the words left her lips, another wave of nausea overwhelmed her, and she doubled over once more.
Aunt Zhou soon arrived, carrying a cup of warm water.
Gu Beiting took the cup from her and knocked softly on the door again. “Are you alright in there?”
Once Su Shu had managed to rinse her mouth and catch her breath, she opened the door, her complexion noticeably paler than before.
She was still slightly breathless, her chest rising and falling rhythmically, and her large, doe-like eyes gazed at him with a hint of fragility.
His voice, instinctively softening, took on a gentler tone. “Rinse your mouth.”
Su Shu accepted the water and rinsed, wiping her mouth with the back of her hand.
As they stepped out together, Gu Beiting retrieved a couple of tissues and took her hand, delicately wiping the back of it.
Wherever his touch lingered, a warm sensation ignited, leaving her feeling almost aflame.
Startled, Su Shu quickly pulled her hand away, taking the tissue from him.
“I’m not averse to cleanliness; I just—” she began to explain in a hushed tone.
“I don’t have a cleanliness obsession; it’s completely normal to wipe your mouth with your hands. It’s just that you had droplets of water on your arm, and it’s better to wipe them off,” he replied earnestly, dispelling her embarrassment in an instant.
As they arrived at the dining room, Old Zhao had already noticed the situation and discreetly removed the chicken soup from the table.
Old Zhao explained, “It seems the chicken soup might have had a certain odor, which made Young Madam uncomfortable. I’m currently preparing pumpkin soup; it will be ready shortly!”
With no trace of the chicken soup’s smell lingering, Su Shu indeed felt her queasiness abate.
“There’s no need to trouble yourself with that!” she insisted, not wishing to impose further on Old Zhao.
Gu Beiting interjected gently, “The baby requires nutrition.”
Su Shu found herself unable to eat much, barely managing half a bowl of rice before feeling full.
Gu Beiting used the serving chopsticks to lift a piece of steamed bass and asked, “Can you manage a bit more fish?”
She bit her lip, initially inclined to decline, but understanding that Mr. Gu’s insistence stemmed from concern for their child, she passed her bowl to him.
To her surprise, Gu Beiting placed the fish into his own bowl instead.
Setting his serving chopsticks down, he looked earnestly at Su Shu and said, “Don’t force yourself. We are husband and wife; you can speak openly with me about anything.”
Su Shu nodded obediently, “Alright, Mr. Gu.”
“And please, no more calling me Mr. Gu. We are married and have a baby together!” he urged, a playful tone surfacing in his voice.
Su Shu furrowed her brows slightly.
If not “Mr. Gu,” then what should she call him?
The father of the child?
