Elevator Survival: Master of Every Floor - Chapter 42 - Incendiary Barrage
After accepting the cigar from Lin Feng, the soldier expressed his gratitude, then didn’t forget to share it with his companions. For common soldiers like them, cigars were a rare treat, and even tobacco was scarce.
Soon, it was time for resupply. Several logistics personnel pushing carts deposited food and various ammunition supplies before leaving.
Lin Feng peered through the narrow firing hole at the dim sky outside, feeling an inexplicable sense of suffocation.
“Hey, Squad Leader, fancy a game of Monopoly?”
Now was a time of rest for the Allied forces, and they wouldn’t launch an attack. It was the only time in the day they could relax.
And playing cards was their sole form of entertainment.
Lin Feng had previously encountered the game of Monopoly, so he picked it up quickly.
Leisure time always seemed short. An hour and a half later, the Allied forces launched another attack.
The soldiers of Lin Feng’s squad immediately returned to their positions, and countless tongues of flame burst from the bunker.
Boatloads of newly landed Allied soldiers were instantly riddled with holes.
The heavy artillery of the beachhead fortress also began bombing the amphibious tanks that the Allies had landed.
Because Lin Feng also had system-assigned tasks, he controlled a machine gun as well.
However, the distance was too far. Even with his mastery of firearms, Lin Feng couldn’t achieve perfect accuracy. Soon, the gun barrel began to overheat.
The assisting loader at his side quickly replaced the gun barrel to ensure the firepower didn’t falter.
Just as Lin Feng was suppressing the crowd with gunfire, he suddenly felt a sting on his cheek. Touching it, he found it was damp.
“Damn, did I get hit?”
Lin Feng touched the wound on his face, feeling helpless. It must have been a stray bullet that grazed him. Still, it was better than a direct headshot.
“You continue with the machine gun. I need to treat this wound,” Lin Feng told the soldier.
…
After arriving in his quarters, Lin Feng looked at his reflection in the grooming mirror.
Thankfully, although the wound was deep, it wasn’t particularly long, at least it didn’t mar his face.
He took out some sulfa powder from his medical kit, sprinkled it on the wound, and then bandaged it up.
Even his bandaging technique was part of his wilderness survival skills.
After preventing infection, Lin Feng returned to the firing hole.
However, this time he chose to use his G43 Semi-automatic Rifle instead of the machine gun.
Several hours of fierce fighting later, the Allied attack was once again repelled.
However, the Allies were not without gains. After a long period of uninterrupted bombing, they finally managed to destroy two exposed bunkers.
The news sent chills down the spines of the Imperial soldiers, who had felt they had victory within their grasp.
Unassailable bunkers were actually shattered.
Ships and aircraft continued to bombard the fortress on Normandy.
The shells fell like they cost nothing.
However, this had nothing to do with Lin Feng, who was hiding in the bunker.
His position was relatively safe for now, except for some shaking and a bit of tinnitus.
As the soldiers in the bunker rested, planes loaded with incendiary bombs braved the dense anti-aircraft network and dropped countless red-marked missiles on the marked bunker positions.
“Boom!!”
A dozen giant missiles exploded above the bunker where Lin Feng was situated, and the next moment, a roaring fire ignited on top of the bunker.
Although it couldn’t directly harm the enemies inside the bunker.
But given time, the inside of the bunker would become as hot as a steamer, making it uninhabitable.
Lin Feng, munching on canned food in a bunker, felt the temperature inside rapidly rising.
“Squad Leader, our bunker has been hit by two incendiary grenades. HQ instructs us to hold on, but if this goes on, we’ll be cooked alive!”
“Damn! What are we waiting for, let’s get out of here!”
Lin Feng tossed away his can. It was no wonder the temperature was rising so quickly. Already drenched in sweat, his undershirt was soaked through.
“But Squad Leader! HQ says we must hold on!”
“Do you want to die?”
Lin Feng asked the rather dimwitted soldier.
The soldier shook his head.
“Then let’s move. Whoever wants to die can stay here. We’re abandoning this bunker, moving to another location immediately!”
“But Squad Leader, if the Military Police find out, we will be severely punished.”
“Don’t worry, I’ve got a plan.”
Lin Feng gave the soldier a reassuring pat on the shoulder.
Soon, he led the remaining soldiers out of the bunker. The entrance was aflame, but luckily, the fire was not intense.
This battle was a certain loss for the Third Reich, and from here on, defeat would follow defeat. So, the soldiers’ concerns about punishment were moot. After all, who knew if they would survive till then?
As Lin Feng led his squad out of the bunker, the chaos outside made him feel dizzy. Regardless, he quickly ran towards the nearest bunker which seemed relatively safe— at least it wasn’t specially targeted by incendiary grenades.
He had his excuses prepared.
Just as they were nearing the fortress, a shell from a mortar landed not far behind Lin Feng.
Two soldiers following him were blown to pieces instantly, making Lin Feng feel sick to his stomach.
But he quickly ran into the fortress.
“Hey! Are you the reinforcements?”
To Lin Feng’s surprise, the Officer guarding the fortress had already provided him with a perfect excuse before he even opened his mouth.
Lin Feng naturally agreed, and after introducing themselves, he had his soldiers replace some of the Officer’s men.
“I didn’t expect reinforcements to arrive so quickly after my request. I thought my distress signal would be ignored, considering the current state of the Reich.”
The Officer was a talkative man, quite unlike the traditional Third Reich soldiers.
Lin Feng felt this man was a bit too slick, and he couldn’t quite sense the aura of a soldier from him.
“Konrad, where are you from?”
“Oh, I’m from Hamburg. I conscripted three years ago, and finally, I’ve worked my way up to a junior officer, haha.”
Konrad responded without hesitation. What Lin Feng didn’t notice was that Konrad’s back was soaked with sweat.
“I see. We’re quite alike, but I enlisted from a small village. You probably have never heard of it, but it’s beautiful. Also, I have a fiancée, look…”
