- Chapter 45: The Banished Girl Opens the Way
The long winter finally ended, and the season of snowmelt arrived. During the winter, the forest had suffered from food shortages, leading to repeated goblin raids. Fortunately, the skeletons detected the threats early, allowing us to prepare and repel them without a single casualty.
As a result, the number of goblin skeletons grew further, now exceeding two hundred.
Additionally, since winter is a time when many wild animals perish, I had the bird skeletons search for dead birds. Thanks to this, the number of bird skeletons also surpassed one hundred.
With all these skeletons working tirelessly, the road leading to Bitterley was completed.
Not only the part that went through my domain but also the section belonging to Count Lazlo’s territory was finished, making it possible to travel by carriage all the way to Bitterley, though safety remained a concern.
This progress was significantly ahead of schedule. Initially, the work on the Bitterley side was planned to start only after the snow melted.
However, I had lent them goblin skeletons free of charge, allowing the construction to proceed faster.
Of course, speeding up the project was a primary goal, but I had another motive. I wanted the skeletons to learn the skills of the craftsmen from Bitterley.
While they wouldn’t master the skills perfectly, they could mimic enough to handle basic tasks, which would be a considerable advantage for us.
Perhaps I should send the skeletons out to other places to learn various techniques.
But enough of that. I’m currently riding in Simon’s carriage along the newly constructed road, heading to Bitterley.
I’m on my way to attend the opening ceremony for the road.
First, though, I need to pick up the dress I ordered for the ceremony.
So, I arrived at ”Catherine Attire”, a boutique on Bitterley’s main street. The boutique is renowned as a purveyor to the Hallows family and is said to be the best in Bitterley, responsible for creating Muriel’s dresses.
“Welcome, Baroness Scarlettford. We have been expecting you. I am Catherine, the owner of this shop.”
As I stepped out of the carriage, guided by Marie, the shop owner greeted me. She appeared ageless, with her hair neatly pulled into an updo. Her stylish yet understated clothing suited her perfectly.
“Yes, I am Olivia Ainsley, Baroness Scarlettford. Please, lead the way.”
“Of course, right this way.”
Catherine led me into a private room inside the shop.
“Here are the afternoon dresses you ordered.”
Three dresses were already displayed in the room, each coordinated beautifully. There was a vibrant red, a chic black, and a charming pink. While the basic design was the same, each had details unique to its color.
Ah, and by the way, the black one is for funerals. I don’t have any plans for one, but given my position, I need to have it just in case.
“Marie, what do you think?”
Marie carefully inspected every detail.
“I believe they are quite satisfactory. As expected from a boutique recommended by Lady Muriel, the craftsmanship is exquisite.”
“Thank you.”
Catherine’s face beamed with confidence at Marie’s praise.
“Let’s take them all. I’d like to wear the red one immediately.”
“Certainly. I have tailored them to the measurements you provided, but please try it on. If any adjustments are needed, I can make them right away.”
“Of course.”
I donned the red dress.
… Yes, it fits perfectly. No tight spots, and it hugs my body just right.
“How is it?”
“Perfect.”
“I’m glad to hear it.”
“Catherine, I’ll be coming back to you from now on.”
“Thank you very much. I look forward to serving you again.”
“Indeed.”
Thus, I finally obtained my dress.
Oh? You’re wondering about the payment? Of course, it’s post-paid. Marie told me that in shops like these, it’s customary not to handle money on the spot.
After seeing Olivia off, Catherine muttered to herself.
“To think someone from the notorious and ruthless Ainsley family, with those black eyes and hair, could be so composed…”
Catherine’s expression turned complicated.
“Oh, that’s why she was banished at such a young age. To think she once wore such tattered clothes… how pitiful.”
She briefly showed a sympathetic face before regaining her composure.
“No, I must make sure to provide her with proper dresses. Yes…”
Mumbling to herself, Catherine disappeared into the depths of the shop.
