- Chapter 80: The Banished Girl Deals with an Attack
“Lady Olivia, what is going on?”
As I was about to step outside, I was stopped by Lord Alfred and Lord Edward, who were supposed to be drinking wine in the dining room.
“It’s an attack. After all, we are in the middle of the Forest of Darkness. Both of you, please wait indoors with your families.”
“Allow us to assist you.”
“No, I appreciate your sentiments. This is Scarletford, my territory. It is my duty to ensure the safety of my guests.”
“I see. Indeed, that makes sense. Then, best of luck.”
“Thank you. I appreciate it.”
After exchanging smiles, I quickly dashed outside.
“Everyone! Evacuate immediately! If anyone is too drunk, help carry them!”
“I… I’ll fight too!”
“Yeah, me too!”
“No! Drunk people can’t help! You’re all stumbling around! Marie, please take care of it!”
“Understood. Come on, everyone! Evacuate quickly!”
“What?!”
Wil and the others were still mumbling, but there was no time to waste standing around.
Nearby, I spotted a bird skeleton and issued a command.
Alright, this one is… Number 93.
“Bi-93, drop rocks from above to attack any intruders. Don’t let them cross the moat. Tell the others nearby to do the same.”
‘’Clack, clack.’’
The bird skeleton took off, and the command spread to the other skeleton birds hiding throughout the village and the forest, each quickly taking up their positions for the assault.
Then, I turned to a nearby skeleton, G-177.
“Are we being attacked by goblins?”
G-177 shook its head.
“Wild boars?”
Again, it shook its head.
“Then, Crescent Bears?”
It shook its head again.
“…Could it be… humans?”
This time, it nodded.
Humans? Could it be bandits? No, that can’t be it.
“Theodore?”
It nodded.
“Hmm, so that’s it. Of all days, they chose to invade on the holy Harvest Festival. Such arrogance. Bi-61, send a message to recall Bears-3 through Bears-15, who are patrolling the road, and instruct them to eliminate the intruders. Relay to all HRs within the village and surrounding areas to attack anyone other than villagers and guests on sight. Report back when you’re done.”
Bi-61 immediately took off toward the forest.
Phew, that should do it for now.
I wanted to know how the situation was unfolding, but I understood that going out myself would have the opposite effect.
After all, Theodore’s target was probably my life.
Having given all the necessary orders, I returned to the house.
“Don’t waver! Move forward! The enemy can’t see in this darkness either!”
The alarm bell rang out, and Theodore shouted, rallying his subordinates.
Whiz, whiz, whiz!
As the knights crossed the temporary bridge, arrows shot down from the walls of the village. Naturally, the archers were goblin skeletons.
The small, specially-made bows released arrows that rained down on the bridge, as if the skeletons could see the intruders clearly.
“Gahh!”
A knight hit by several arrows staggered and fell from the temporary bridge into the moat. Wearing heavy armor, he sank swiftly to the bottom.
“Urghhh!”
Lightly armored knights who had already crossed the bridge were also hit by arrows, collapsing to the ground.
“What’s going on?!”
“It’s as if they can see us!”
“Hold up the large shields!”
“Yes, sir!”
With Theodore’s command, the unit quickly regrouped, raised their shields, and began advancing. His decision worked, as the large shields blocked all the incoming arrows.
One by one, the knights crossed the moat, and just as about half of them, including Theodore, made it across…
Splash, bang, bang, bang!
A loud crash rang out, and the temporary bridge began to shake. Massive splashes erupted in the moat around the bridge.
The knights in the middle of crossing lost their balance and fell into the water.
And then—
“Agh!”
“Ow!”
Hard objects began raining down on the knights who had already crossed.
“Ugh! Rocks?! Siege team, break down the gate!”
“Yes, sir!”
The workers, carrying large hammers and tools, rushed to the gate. They were about to start on the suspended iron gate when—
“Agh!”
“Urgh!”
“Ahhhh!”
The members of the siege team screamed and collapsed where they stood.
“Hey! What’s go—gahh!”
A knight who approached to check was also taken down by an unknown force.
Yes, a Horned Rabbit skeleton hidden in the shadows had driven its horn into them.
“Eek!”
“What… what’s happening?!”
The knights panicked as they tried to figure out the source of the mysterious attacks. But without any light, they couldn’t spot the pitch-black skeletons of the Horned Rabbits.
“Bring the lanterns! Where are the lanterns?!”
“No! We’ll be turned into targets!”
Theodore immediately stopped his subordinates from acting in panic.
“But, sir!”
A massive barrage of rocks then came crashing down from the sky.
Crash! Splat!
“Ugh…ah…”
“H-Help me…”
Falling from great heights, the rocks crushed the knights, armor and all, as they collapsed onto the ground.
Crack! Splat!
One of the rocks struck the temporary bridge directly, partially destroying it.
“What?”
“Our escape route…?”
“Ahhhhh!”
“Panic! Breakthrough!”
“No, it’s hopeless!”
“Run away!”
Finally, the knights fell into a complete state of panic.
