God's Prophecy - Chapter 1 - Unreasonable Killing Intent
A few months ago, I was just a farmer living with my family. We weren’t exactly wealthy. Nevertheless, I had a loving father, mother, and siblings. We lived in a rural area where we had to work together as a family to make ends meet. At the time, I was a child who couldn’t notice how fortunate I was with such a life.
But… now I understand; living such a normal life with my family… how happy it was.
It all came crashing down one day when our village was attacked by bandits. That day, I stood confused, not understanding why they would target such a poor village like ours. I remember hearing the gang’s boss laughing as he swung his sword at the begging village chief, saying, “This village fits what I need perfectly! You can die now, for our sake.”
“It fits perfectly.” He said. My family was butchered because it fits perfectly. It was not for a reason such as famine, or even debts that we failed to pay off
It was only by chance that I survived. On the day of the attack, I happened to be collecting wild plants near the village, so I was able to avoid being found by the attackers.
However, surviving as a child, all alone, when winter was knocking was far from fortunate.
The temperature continued to drop with every passing day. I was scared to close my eyes at night, for fear of not waking up the next day. There was hardly anything to eat in the mountains after the harvest season. And the hungry beasts would always look for any chance to attack me.
I was desperate to stay alive.
I once found something in the wild that I thought was safe to eat, but I ended up getting poisoned. It almost killed me. It was also when I would search for firewood to keep myself warm during the bone-chilling cold but not find any do I realize that I might never make it past this winter.
One evening, I saw a carriage running through the mountains. I thought it might have been a merchant. I was pretty sure they were a small group because they didn’t have any guards.
However, that wasn’t what caught my attention.
“Maybe I should have you start working in the shop soon.”
“Really?! Can I really help Father?”
“Yes, but you need to learn how to do business first.”
“Okay, I’ll do my best!”
This conversation between father and child could be heard, accompanied by the sound of rattling wheels on the road. It was a normal conversation about their future. But to me, it was the type of conversation I grew to despise from the bottom of my heart.
Why… why was everything taken away from me, yet they are allowed to be happy. They have everything, yet I have nothing….
In my hand was a rusted knife I had found in the mountains. It was probably dropped by some bandit or adventurer. It wasn’t very sharp, but it can still take down two people….
I remembered the words of the person who had caused me to fall into this torturous hell as these thoughts crossed my mind. “You can die now, for our sake.”
That’s right… for my sake; for my survival; to ensure that I stay alive, there was no other way….
Even if I had to do something horrible to this father-child pair in front of me. Even if I stripped their happiness away and killed them, I wouldn’t be in the wrong.
Even though those words came out of the mouth of the man I hated the most, they resonated with me deeply. I slowly approached the nearing wagon, keeping the sound of my steps as low as I could. And just before jumping on the wagon, to take out the unsuspecting parent, I noticed a door next to me.
It was a simple door with a doorknob. It stood in the middle of the path, not even attached to a tree.
What is this?
It was obviously a door that shouldn’t be here, and for some reason, I felt compelled to open it and step inside. I don’t know whether it was because of my previously roused excitement for murder or if it was just a step of desperation.
