How Could He Possibly Like Me? - Chapter 1.1
How would someone normally feel when they unexpectedly learned that the person they were romantically involved with already had a girlfriend?
When Meng Shuyu heard the news, she was so moved she wanted to cry.
Five minutes ago, Meng Shuyu closed the last portfolio at her office workstation when she suddenly received a video from her best friend Chen Xing.
In the background of the video, a long street at night was visible. As the camera focused, the heroine walked out of the brightly lit restaurant, waved to the people behind her, ran down the stairs in three or two steps, jumped into the arms of the hero, wrapping her arms around his waist, and said something daintily.
The hero smiled and ruffled her hair, took her hand, led her to the black SUV on the roadside, and helped her fasten her seat belt carefully.
The video, which lasted for about 20 seconds, was paired with sweet background music, and every frame exuded an aura of passionate love that even an LCD screen couldn’t block.
Meng Shuyu froze for a while before coming back to her senses.
She didn’t recognize the heroine in the video, but she was very sure that the man was Jian Cheng.
After all, just half a month ago, she was sitting in the passenger seat of that Audi Q7, holding the doll he gave her, listening to his old-fashioned pickup lines ‘you’re a little weird today, weirdly good-looking ‘, and trying to make herself laugh at him while her toes curled in embarrassment.
Meng Shuyu replayed the video over and over again, emotions ranging from disbelief the first time she saw it, to almost crying with joy the last time.
Seeing that she didn’t reply after a long wait, Chen Xing sent a string of messages one after another –
[Look, this is Jian Cheng! I saw it on TikTok. It’s a video from last week labeled with the words #chance encounter with other people’s love!]
[I get that you’ve been working overtime every day without going on a date, but you and Jian Cheng are just one step away from becoming boyfriend and girlfriend. This is definitely cheating!]
[This man is playing with you. Quite honestly, I didn’t expect him to be so bold. Didn’t the families aet you two up? He’s not afraid of disputes between the two families in the future?]
[Forget it. Even a king has his limits, it’s better to look forward to snow in June… Hey, are you done with work? Do you want to go out and grab a drink?]
At around eight in the evening, only Meng Shuyu and an intern were working overtime in the secretary’s office, but the lights were still on in the president’s office just beyond the wall. Meng Shuyu couldn’t make any exaggerated movements, so all her excitement was contained in the tapping of her fingertips on the keyboard.
[Okay, how about opening a bottle of champagne to celebrate?]
This time it was Chen Xing’s turn to freeze.
[Are you okay?]
Before Meng Shuyu could explain, her phone beeped, and a notification window popped up.
[Mr. Cai has a guest at 21:00]
She replied to Chen Xing with [talk later], leaned back in her chair, and asked the person in the next workstation.
“Shuangshuang, did you forget something?”
Tao Shuangshuang looked up at the time and sat up violently.
“Ahh, I lost track of time while I was reading!”
“Is that an excuse?”
Meng Shuyu had a very passive face, oval with soft outlines, natural smiling lips, round and straight nose and a pair of fawn eyes. The pupils were dark and pure. Her appearance made her seem sweet and harmless, but that made it difficult to establish her authority in the workplace.
This was especially true when she was the CEO’s secretary, in a group that had a market value of hundreds of billions, being too easygoing undermines the authority of the superior.
Whenever this happend, she always had to put in more effort to keep a straight face.
“I can remind you today, but starting next week, I won’t be at headquarters anymore. Do you plan to say this to Mr. Cai in the future?”
“I’m sorry, Sister Shuyu….”
Tao Shuangshuang stood up immediately to listen to her instruction, head lowered far enough it looked like her neck would break.
However, Meng Shuyu suddenly didn’t want to scold her anymore.
The sky that had been dark for at least half a month, suddenly cleared up and the moon appeared that night making even the careless intern became cute in her eyes.
“Alright, don’t let it happen next time, go and make the necessary preparations.”
Meng Shuyu waved her hand in dismissal.
“Okay, sister Shuyu, feel free to clock out, you can leave this place to me!”
Tao Shuangshuang hurried out to get things ready.
Meng Shuyu rubbed her stiff shoulders, turned back, and sighed at the two half-meter-tall stacks of files on the table.
A month ago, Mr. Cai assigned her a new task and asked her to transfer to the sub-brand division of the group to serve as a temporary assistant to the new general manager who would take up the post in September.
She’d been running back and forth this whole month, handing over the work at the Yongyi headquarters to new people, while getting familiar with the current situation at the Hangzhou subsidiary. So far, she’d lost a full five pounds.
Fortunately, everything was ready now and she was just waiting for the official transfer next week.
There was just one problem that needed to be solved before leaving…
