Chapter 2: The Granger Viscount Family
—————
The dim winter sunlight penetrated the worn and thin curtains, casting its faint glow upon my face. It seemed that Patience’s habit had prevailed, as I lay on top of the thin futon with my arm delicately resting outside, fingers elegantly intertwined.
“Ah… it’s cold.”
I attempted to burrow into the futon, but my stomach growled loudly.
“If I did not take any breakfast, I could not do anything.”
While my mind thought ‘I’m hungry,’ the words that came out were automatically transformed into the more elegant form. Like ‘Mum’ get transformed to ‘Mother’. It was unclear whether this was convenient or inconvenient.
From my recollection, the only maid here is the red-haired Mary. There’s also the cook, Eva, a manservant, George, and the butler, Wyatt, who oversees everything.
“Is this really what it’s like to be an aristocrat?”
I had imagined there would be more maids and such, but that may be due to the problems within the Granger family.
Though Patience only knows this lifestyle, it appears that her father, the Granger Viscount, was a non-landed noble of the legal aristocracy.
Ideally, he would serve in the royal palace and receive a salary, but it seems he has been dismissed. It was an exceptional and significant event, but Patience’s memories were not clear on the details. Lady Patience seemed uninterested in salaries and such. However, I did remember that the number of maids dwindled a few years before our mother passed away.
“So, that means no salary! And it seems to have been the case for about four years now?”
Patience’s youngest brother, Henry, was six years old at this year. In other words, our mother passed away, leaving behind a cute four-year-old son. Well, at that time, Nathius was six, and Patience was eight years old.
“Well, I am ten years old, so maybe I wouldn’t understand our father’s unemployment.”
Yes, I am ten! I have become young again, or rather, it’s more like I’ve become a child again. Well, it’s better than becoming an old lady, right?
Since no maid was coming to help me change, I get out of bed.
“So, this is for washing my face?”
In the sideboard, there was a ceramic washbasin with a faded pattern that was likely once a lovely floral design. And there was a jug of water inside.
“As for a toothbrush… could it be this coarse fabric….?”
There is a toothbrush in my memory, but it seems all I have now is this coarse cloth. This needs to be improved urgently!
After washing my face with lukewarm water, I opened the chest of drawers. There are two clothing, but I assume the lacy one is for summer, so I choose the thin, long-sleeved light blue garment.
“This is… not suitable for winter, right?”
Although it was long-sleeved, it’s thin. Mary’s maid uniform seems warmer, it was made from cotton there, while this one seems to be made from silk. Perhaps it was an attempt to maintain the appearance of nobility? Or it may have been a gift. I remembered that we have some relatives.
“Let’s see, for underwear… drawers and chemises… and the socks are made of cotton.”
I fastened the stockings with garters and put on the flimsy silk garment.
“Cold!”
I searched for something to wrap myself in, but there was only a coat inside the chest of drawers.
“Can I wear the coat?”
Patience inside her mind pulled back her hand as if to say, 『No, you can’t』.
“There should be a fireplace in the dining room.”
Even if I stayed in this cold room, my hunger wouldn’t be satisfied. I tried to go to the dining room quickly, but Patience intervened.
『I need to put the beds! And fold the pajamas and put them in the chest of drawers』.
I wanted to complain that it was normally the maids’ job to do that, but there was no one besides Mary. She must be busy taking care of my angelic brothers.
As a poor noble, Patience was accustomed to tidying the beds up. Besides, the thin futon made it easy to tidy up.
Finally, after receiving permission, I hurried to the dining room. I have memories of this area, so I didn’t get lost. Despite being poor, the mansion seems to be spacious, with a gently spiraling staircase leading down to the first-floor dining room.
“Good morning.”
Father, William, was reading the newspaper at the dining table. The fireplace was lit, so this place was warmer than the bedroom.
“Patience, morning. Are you feeling better?”
Father William has slightly graying brown hair and light gray eyes. He raised his gaze from the newspaper, looking concerned.
“Yes, Father. I apologize for causing you to worry.”
I have a favorable impression of my refined father, but I have no expectations of his ability to manage our household.
Although not as much as Patience, William was also quite thin, and the sleeves of his coat were considerably worn.
It hurts her chest, whether it’s a memory of the late Patience’s or her own desire, but she want to dress him in a warmer coat.
“Father, sisters, good morning.”
My younger brothers arrived in the dining room escorted by Mary. Really, Angel~!!
“Nathius, Henry! Good morning!”
“Big sister, are you okay now?”
The older Nathius has brown hair and gray eyes, just like father. But I don’t want him to inherit his lack of life skills.
“Yes, Nathius. Thank you.”
I gave Nathius a kiss on the cheek. Really, happy~! Patience also seemed to approve, this appeared to be her daily routine.
“So, Sister, can we play?”
Henry, the younger one, has the same golden hair and blue eyes as me. He takes after our mother. I must ensure he doesn’t die young.
“Yes, let’s play.”
I lifted Henry into my arms and kissed his cheek. Ah, happiness~!!
But this happiness didn’t last long.
『This is… awful!』
The soup has a thin layer of tasteless vegetables floating in it, and the bread was thinly sliced yet hard. There was only one piece, too. Patience, who was already so thin, has no need for more diet routine.
And to think that my younger brothers have to eat only this for breakfast! They’re in their growing years, it’s awful.
But Patience maintain a refined composure and slowly sip the soup. The more she tasted the soup, the more it felt there was no flavor.
I must investigate whether Eva’s cooking skills are lacking or if the household finances are so tight that they can only prepare such meals.
