Chapter 3 – A Sad Lunch
—————
I finished my—who knows enough or not—breakfast and wanted to stay inside the warmer dining room rather than my bedroom, but it seemed impossible. After the meal, Father would go inside his study, and the little ones would be taken to child’s room.
Furthermore, the servant George had just removed unburned firewood from the fireplace. So even if I stared at an unlit fireplace, it wouldn’t make the room any warmer.
According to Patience’s memories, the morning was reserved for studying. Of course, there were no fancy tutors here. There was a vague memory of having one for a brief time when she was very young. Before Father became unemployed, perhaps the Granger family had led a more typical noble life.
Afterward, Mother had taught me letters and numbers, and then… I see! Now, I must be the one to teach my brothers!
I hurriedly made my way to the child’s room, eager to teach my brothers! It seemed like a fun idea.
The child’s room was quite spacious. Well, it didn’t need to be this large. There was a small fire burning in the fireplace, but it hardly provided any warmth. It was still cold.
“Nathius can continue with your studies. And Henry, can you write all the letters?”
In the child’s room, there were three desks and chairs in front of the fireplace. Nathius was quite talented, according to Patience’s memories, while Henry had just begun his studies.
“I’ve already memorized them all!”
Henry earnestly wrote with his young fingers on a stone slate, using a slate pencil. How adorable.
By the way, what about me, Patience? It seemed I quite enjoyed studying. There were plenty memories of me reading books.
It appeared that the Granger family, despite their impoverished life, had a penchant for academics. Despite their financial situation, the library was impressive, and Father seemed to be a bookworm, or rather, all he does was reading newspapers and books.
『Are there no schools or anything?』 I googled for it in Patience’s memories. It seemed that in the Kingdom of Laurence, there were indeed schools. Nobles, especially, were obliged to attend the Royal Academy in the capital, Romano, from the ages of ten to sixteen.
『Wait, from the agea of ten, so I have to attend too?』
While studying might be fine, dealing with noble society seemed troublesome, and, quite frankly, I feel it was impossible. I was relying on Patience’s memories for etiquette and such, but clothing and such were a bit tricky.
As promised, I played with Henry after he finished practicing letters and simple arithmetic. Even if I say that, I was just reading a book to him. It was far too cold to play outside with the light snowfall and wind blowing outside.
And then lunch… it made me feel sad. This morning soup, a thinly sliced bread, and the almost transparent slice of ham. Slicing it this thin was quite a feat. I was beginning to escape from reality and accepted the thought that Eva, the cook, was truly skilled.
Patience used to give this ham to her brothers, didn’t she? Well, it was impossible! If this goes along, she would surely be dead.
“I’ve just recovered from an illness, so Nathius and Henry, please eat.”
But still, my younger brothers, aged six and eight, were in their growing years. I wanted to feed them properly.
『All right, I’ll improve life in the Granger household!』 I declared with determination. But after lunch, Father summoned me to his study. I wondered what he wanted? Even in Patience’s memories, being summoned to the study was a rare occurrence.
『Could it be that he’s figured out I’m possessing her?”』
Patience’s memories were there, and my actions were influenced by her knowledge and customs, but there was a vague sense that Patience was no longer with us. Perhaps Father had sensed this.
『What will I do if I get kicked out?』
I worried as I politely knocked on Father’s study door.
