20. The Abyssal Battle (Part Two)
“Clang—” “Dang—” “Clang—” “Dang—”
The heavy sound of metal scraping against the ground grew closer and closer.
Ryan’s face was filled with despair, tears and snot mixing as they flowed into his mouth.
He knew those were the footsteps of the ghastly demon hot on his heels, sending shivers down his spine.
Ryan never imagined that such a thing would happen to him one day.
He was just a village ruffian, idle and unproductive.
But he didn’t think there was anything wrong with that. After all, his father took care of the big issues, and his mother the small ones. He was the only child, the apple of his parents’ eye. It was only natural that he didn’t have to do anything and just enjoy life.
Ryan thought life was comfortable this way.
The villagers laughed at him behind his back, he knew, but he never thought about changing.
Life, as long as he was happy, why should he care about others’ gazes?
He had always lived with this mindset.
Until one day, a girl came to the village.
Her name was Sil. As for her full name, Ryan never had the courage to ask.
But he swore, he had never seen such a beautiful girl in his life.
The moment Ryan saw her, the world suddenly bloomed like spring, as if awakening from a dream.
From that moment on, she was all that occupied his mind.
The annoying Barry called her Sister Sil, so he followed suit. Sister Sil’s every smile and frown kept him awake day and night.
How could he start a conversation with this girl?
Ryan thought hard and then slapped his forehead: the old way, tease her.
So he led his little followers, wherever Sister Sil went, they followed, and at the right moment, they would say some flirtatious words.
Every time he saw Sister Sil embarrassed by his teasing, Ryan felt a particular sense of achievement.
No one but him could make Sister Sil show such an expression.
Ryan thought smugly.
Then… then he got beaten up by his father.
“To chase a girl, it’s not with these lowly tricks that you’ll win her favor, that will only annoy her. You must make the girl feel secure and at ease with you.”
Ryan took his father’s advice and decided to change.
He was about to turn nineteen, and he had never been so serious about anything in his life.
Today, Ryan intended to apologize to Sister Sil and… still wanted to find an opportunity to tease her again.
Although he knew it was wrong. But Sister Sil, when embarrassed, was really… enchanting.
He just liked Sister Sil, liked the way she looked at him.
With a joyful heart, Ryan arrived at Granny Claire’s doorstep, knocked for a long time, but found no one home.
Where had everyone gone…
As he pondered this question, disaster struck.
And then there were dead people everywhere.
The black sun and terrible monsters appeared.
What happened next was beyond his comprehension, like the horror stories of demons he heard as a child.
Up to now, Ryan had no real sense of it all. He was just numb, as if in a dream, stumbling and hiding, and in the end, the demon found him.
And now, he really couldn’t run anymore.
Maybe… just stop here.
But stopping meant death.
But he was really too tired.
But if he stopped now, he probably wouldn’t see Sister Sil again.
But if he kept running, he would die of exhaustion, right?
Is there no one to save me…
Anyone, please save me! I haven’t lived enough, I want to marry Sister Sil as my bride, I don’t want to die!!!
Ryan ran and cried, tears and snot flowing into his mouth, tasting salty and bitter.
At that moment.
“Whoosh—”
A fragrant breeze suddenly swept over his head, and the next moment, there was a change behind him.
“Clang—”
The crisp sound of a blade cutting through the air. Then, Ryan heard something fall to the ground.
The deathly pursuit quieted down.
“Huff—, huff—”
Ryan gradually stopped running.
His physical strength was completely drained, his lips cracked, his face pale, his legs shaking like chaff.
He slowly turned his head.
Just in time to see two hideous black heads roll to his feet.
The heads had human-like features but none in the right place. A mouth on the forehead, a nose on the side of the face, two blood-red eyes, one on the chin, one on the left ear.
The sight was both ridiculous and chilling.
“Ah—!!”
Ryan screamed, stumbled back two steps, and sat down on the ground.
But he found that the heads had collapsed in on themselves, as if melted by intense heat, and along with the headless bodies not far away, turned into ash that scattered in the wind.
A few specks of blue light landed on his body and face, cool to the touch.
Ryan reached out his right hand to touch his cheek.
This sensation… it seemed like… snowflakes? Or frost?
“Huff—”
The ash was blown away by the gentle breeze.
The next moment, the image reflected in Ryan’s pupils transformed into a sky filled with snowflakes that resembled stars.
And hidden within the snowflakes was a delicate white figure, a strand of black hair soaring to the sky.
She was like a princess of ice and snow from a fairy tale world, yet also like a hunter lurking in the midst of a wild frost.
Who… was she?
At that moment, Ryan’s brain lost the ability to think.
Then the girl turned around, revealing the face he had been dreaming of day and night.
Ryan was stunned.
For an instant, he felt as if he were in a surreal dream.
Until the girl spoke to him.
“Ryan, head to the outskirts of the village, and meet up with Aria.”
“…Sil… cough, Sister Sil?”
Ryan finally came to his senses, stammering as he spoke.
“Yes, hurry up and run.”
Sister Sil’s face was still breathtakingly beautiful, but it lacked its usual gentleness.
“You… what’s this?”
“No time, go now.”
“Clang—” “Dang—” “Clang—”
The grating sound of footsteps resumed, more demons moving rapidly in their direction with relentless strides.
Ryan’s pupils dilated in an instant.
“Sister Sil, watch out!”
As soon as he spoke, the girl in front of him moved.
“Snap.”
She leaped, arched back, flipped through the air.
She brought up a mist of icy blue and stardust, twirling twice in the air, positioning herself above the demons, and swung her scythe.
“Buzz—”
Heads fell in response to her strike.
Ryan struggled to his feet, watching the girl he called sister effortlessly slay a demon. She landed and quickly dodged another demon’s attack, her scythe’s blade turning sharply, slicing it in two from bottom to top.
The whole process was incredibly fast.
“[Abyssal Language] Slay.”
The demonic whisper echoed from the sky once more.
Countless demons, upon hearing the command, twisted their grotesque bodies and surged towards Sister Sil.
The girl seemed to intentionally draw the battlefield away, her figure flitting like a butterfly through the encircling monsters. Her scythe, now coated in a thin layer of frost, was gripped at the very end of the handle, each swing creating a thick chill, with an attack range so wide it was terrifying. The demons could hardly get close, and the few that slipped through were struck by the girl’s left hand, which flickered with blue light, instantly freezing them into ice sculptures, unable to harm her in the slightest.
“How beautiful…”
In that moment, Ryan forgot his fear, forgot to run; he forgot everything, simply admiring the solo dance of Sister Sil.
Gradually, the number of approaching demons grew, and the girl’s petite figure was soon engulfed by them.
“Sister Sil!!!” Ryan stood up with all his might.
The next moment, a bone-chilling cold blasted towards him.
“Crack, crack, crack—Boom!!!”
Countless towering ice spikes exploded before his eyes, shattering into a sky full of ice shards, covering the surrounding hundred meters with a thin layer of frost. The temperature of the air plummeted, Ryan huddled up and hugged his arms, his teeth starting to chatter.
For Ryan, this was the second massacre he had witnessed today. Only this time, the victims were those terrifying demons.
Ice spikes of various sizes and thicknesses spread from a central point, like a blooming flower of exquisite beauty, freezing everything within dozens of meters.
The demons, which a second ago could easily reap lives, making one flee without the slightest thought of resistance, were now either frozen within the ice or impaled upon it, all motionless.
The girl stood barefoot on the tallest ice spike, looking up at the black sun, her cloak fluttering in the wind.
Ryan’s snot had frozen into strands hanging by his mouth.
His father was a passionate man who loved to hear stories of heroes. Influenced by him, Ryan also knew many legendary human heroes.
Like the most faithful follower of the gods, the Holy Church’s Cardinal George.
Like the Sword Saint Ryan, who could cut rivers with a single stroke and had the heart of a lion.
Like the mysterious and unpredictable King of Tricksters, the Lord of Shantelburg, Scaliège.
Like Carlos Gonzales, who could walk through the Abyss, the Silver Flash.
And then there was the Queen of Isenbell, Elizabeth II, dubbed the Black Mandala.
And so on and so forth.
These heroes’ names were deeply etched in Ryan’s memory. As a boy, he had fantasized about how powerful these individuals were and what feats they could accomplish.
Yet at this moment, the image of Sister Sil in his eyes began to overlap with the shadows of those heroes from his fantasies.
“[Abyssal Language] Slay.”
“Whoosh, whoosh—”
Two black blades tore through the air.
At the same time, the ice spike beneath Sister Sil’s feet suddenly extended upwards, the girl leaning forward in a dive, narrowly missing the incoming blades.
“Boom, boom—!!”
“Crash—”
The blades collided with the ice mountain, shattering it along with the frozen demons.
Sharp fragments grazed Ryan’s cheek, drawing blood.
He couldn’t stay here any longer.
Ryan forced his trembling legs to move, his steps unsteady as he ran towards the distance.
“Ah—!!!”
Behind him, the girl leaped high on the ice pillar, her scythe gleaming with a cold light, colliding with the black sun.
