I Come From the Abyss to Save Humanity Today - Volume 1 Chapter 26
26. The Girl from Silgaya (Part Two)
On the bumpy village road, the girl, who had already washed away the bloodstains, was wearing a delicate light white dress and talking to the unreliable swordsman walking beside her.
“So, I slept! Four days?! ”
I stared at Carlos with wide eyes.
“Um, that’s amazing.”
The bearded swordsman shrugged his shoulders.
“I, am, recovering my strength…”
“How are your injuries?”
“…Much better.”
“Oh, recovered so quickly, that’s amazing.”
The casually blurted praise seemed insincere, and I didn’t really want to pay him any attention.
“Don’t you want to go to the toilet?”
“…None of your, damn business.”
I gave him an annoyed look, this unserious guy. In this era, no one would ask a girl such a question, but this guy just casually, as usual, asked it out loud.
“During the time you were unconscious, your grandmother and that little boy named Barry came to see you. It’s just that the white dragon was watching you too closely, and they didn’t dare to come close. I say, do you want to go see them first?”
“…I dare not.”
“Why not?”
“I don’t know.”
“…Hey, little Sil. What are you planning to do in the future?”
“I haven’t thought about it.”
“The Holy Church has already revoked the order to hunt you down, but you have to go with me to Fusel soon… that’s the headquarters of the church in the Silgaya region, the Pope wants to see you. Any problems?”
“Yes.”
Carlos frowned upon hearing this.
“What’s the problem? What I said before wasn’t just talk, the Pope will grant you the honor and medals you deserve.”
“It’s a trap.”
“…Are you stupid? If we still wanted to kill you, do you think you could be standing here talking to me? You would have died a hundred times over by now.”
“Big White, protect me.”
“Just relying on that dragon won’t stop the church. I’m telling you, this opportunity was hard-won by me, you have to go, no discussion.”
“I won’t.”
“You stupid woman… Alright, considering you were just born not long ago. I’ll make it clear to you, the honor personally granted by the Pope is the highest medal in this world. By then, just open your mouth, and whether it’s money, or handsome… guys, what do you want that you can’t have? Plus, I’ll give you a big manor with a hundred servants, tsk tsk, the outside world is very exciting, you just enjoy it, and you’ll have a unicorn carriage to take you wherever you go every day, that’s princess-level treatment. How about it, if you’re moved, we’ll set off tomorrow?”
“No way.”
“…Then what do you want? To continue being a village girl here?”
“Yeah.”
“Damn, a woman who hasn’t seen the world…”
Seeing Carlos looking frustrated, I felt very happy.
For someone who bullied me, how could I satisfy you like this?
You tell me to go east, I’ll go west.
Thinking somewhat smugly, I suddenly heard someone calling my name.
“…Little Sil?”
Carlos and I turned our heads to look, and Grandma Claire walked over, trembling.
“…Grandma.”
I lowered my head, a bit afraid to look into her eyes.
“It really is little Sil, Grandma thought she was seeing things, dressed so prettily… when did you wake up?”
“Just woke up.”
“Come here, let Grandma have a look.” Grandma Claire touched my arm, looking me up and down from head to toe, “Does it still hurt?”
“It doesn’t hurt anymore.”
I slowly shook my head.
“Grandma heard everything from Barry, with injuries like that, how could it not hurt…”
“I’m not in pain. Grandma, it’s good that you’re okay.”
“Silly girl, Grandma was in the church in the town at that time, what could have happened… It’s all my fault, if I had brought Father Merlin back earlier, maybe I could have helped little Sil… and Aria wouldn’t have…”
The words Grandma said slapped me awake from my dream.
Aria…
That was something I deliberately avoided recalling since the moment I woke up.
If possible, I would give anything to bring her back to life.
I really want, really want, to see that thin and cheerful girl again.
“It’s not your fault, Grandma.”
I sniffed, trying hard to hold back the tears in my eyes.
“It’s not your fault, it’s me… I didn’t protect her… I didn’t notice, she just ran in front of me… I just wanted to save Allen… I really didn’t see, sob… It’s all my fault. It’s all my fault, I was careless, I didn’t see her… sob… I could have saved her… why did she come back to find me… sob… why did she run in front of me… sob… Allen is also dead… wooooo…”
In the end, I couldn’t hold back my tears and cried.
I spoke intermittently, desperately wiping with both hands.
Only endless regret remained in my heart.
“Silly girl, don’t cry. You saved Barry, you saved so many people in the village, you’ve done very well, you’re Grandma’s pride…”
“I can still… sob… call you, Grandma?”
“What are you talking about! I will always be your Grandma.”
Grandma Claire gently hugged me.
I rested my head on her thin shoulder, smelling the scent on her body that made me feel at ease.
“Thank you, Grandma.”
Carlos looked up at the sky.
The sky was clear and blue.
“Grandma, I think, I want to see her.”
…………
Not far from the village, in the fields.
The cemetery was just finished the day before yesterday, and those lying here were also villagers who died in this disaster.
Most of the dead had no bodies, just simple stones were erected, or simply two broken wooden boards were made into simple crosses, with inscriptions carved on them as tombstones.
This was also considered to give the souls of the dead a place to rest and leave a memory for the living.
I stood quietly in front of a stone tablet, with Grandma Claire and Barry beside me.
The stone tablet was engraved with two lines of crooked text.
“My name is Aria, a kind and brave girl.”
It looked like it was done by Barry, not only because it was very ugly, but also because I found typos in the short two sentences.
“Barry, it’s really ugly.”
“…” Barry didn’t speak, just smiled at me slightly.
In just a few days, the once somewhat childish little boy seemed to have grown up a lot in an instant.
The other stone tablet nearby belonged to Allen, the calm and composed, Aria’s fiancé.
“Aria, little Sil is here to see you. Now you can rest assured, look, she’s fine.”
Grandma Claire clasped her hands in front of the tombstone, looking like she was praying, but her mouth was saying words that made people’s eyes sour.
So I learned to do the same.
I don’t know if this can convey what I want to say to you, but…..
Aria, I’m sorry.
A good girl like you should have had a happy life. The future was still long, and there were so many beautiful things that hadn’t happened yet, you were about to… you were about to get married, and have one more person who loves you, and in the future, you would have another person you love the most.
But the damn monster destroyed everything.
Aria, do you know, I am also such a monster.
I have… also destroyed countless families like this. Maybe among them, there were people as kind and brave as you.
I don’t know if this is a punishment for me, to lose you, my sister.
I actually don’t know what to say to you… right, the hymn, I’ve learned it for a long time, now I’ll sing it for you, okay?
May you be well in heaven.
Carlos sat unceremoniously on a mound of dirt not far away, staring at the girl’s back in a daze.
He vaguely felt that he had made a quite correct decision this time. This decision might affect the future direction of the entire human race, or even the entire world.
His Holiness the Pope, maybe, it’s about to change. He thought.
After a while, the girl’s ethereal singing echoed through the cemetery.
“When the bride steps into the hall of the wedding.
The groom looks up at her with deep affection.
She is such a shy girl.
Let’s put the hands of the bride and groom together.
The priest and family pray, conveying their good wishes in their hearts.
In this holy hall, they express their love.
Bring her to God with love and pride.
May God bless, may God bless.
May God bless, may God bless.”
…………
The night was mellow, the crescent moon was like brocade, and the sky was dotted with stars.
The night scene of the countryside was silent, and the village road under the moonlight was empty, with only the shadows of houses and trees visible. The peaceful stream meandered through the dense shadows of the trees, coated with a layer of silver by the bright moonlight.
Carlos and I sat quietly by the stream, looking at the dim lights in the distance, listening to the murmuring whispers of the water caressing the pebbles.
“…Suddenly I feel that just staying here like this is actually not bad. When you have nothing, you don’t fight for anything.”
Carlos muttered softly.
“Ruining the mood.”
I shot him a glance, slipping off my shoes and dipping my calves into the water.
I enjoy the cool sensation.
“Back to the question from earlier, what are your plans?”
“…The monster said, I’m one of its kind.” I answered, somewhat lost, gazing into the clear stream, “Car… pigeon, what do you think I am?”
“It’s Carlos.” Carlos replied with a slight irritation but a smile, “I’m not one for grand speeches, but I have some thoughts to share with you. First off, I believe what defines you isn’t ‘what you are’ but ‘what you do’. I don’t judge by appearances; I like to look at the core of issues. Yes, maybe you are the same kind as it, but so what? Among humans, there are those who are outwardly noble but inwardly vile and despicable. Compared to them, I find the monsters of the Abyss much more endearing. So, the crux isn’t what you are, but what you want to do… So, little Sil, what do you want to do?”
Carlos’s voice wasn’t loud, but it carried an inexplicable power that shattered the entanglements around my heart.
The clouds dispersed, revealing clarity.
“I want, to kill monsters.”
“Then, you are not one of them.”
“What should I do?”
Carlos smiled.
He brushed off some weeds from his clothes and walked over, extending his hand to me.
“How does the proposal to become a Papal Knight sound to you?”
…………
Ps: The first volume ends here.
What I wanted to convey in this volume is very simple, extremely simple. It’s about a monster, hated by humans, becoming a Papal Knight, even a hero among humans.
Calling it the first volume, but it’s actually just a prologue. It’s equivalent to the cause in other works that’s usually covered in a few sentences or at most a chapter or two, but I’ve used nearly 80,000 words.
The plot of death, in light novels, is usually unpopular. That’s why I didn’t write Aria as a beautiful woman or a character with a romantic ambiguity with the protagonist. Because the significance of her character lies in her death.
It can be said that there’s no romance or love scenes in this volume. Because the protagonist has just arrived in this world, with such a monstrous identity, she’s too confused to engage in romance or ambiguity with anyone. It wouldn’t be appropriate.
So, all the characters that appeared in this prologue, except for Carlos and the earliest knight commander and the robed elder, are not important.
The important characters are the heroes mentioned by Ryan and Barry, who will form emotional bonds with the protagonist.
In this volume, I give myself 50 points; there are too many shortcomings.
The next volume is where the real story of this book begins, and I hope I can write it wonderfully. There will no longer be plots that might make people feel powerless and uncomfortable, to be honest, I don’t like writing such plots either, it’s better to keep things exciting when it should be.
As for whether this book is about yuri or marriage… it’s neither.
If I had to describe it, it would be the little pet of the Papal Knights… something like that?
The woman backed by countless heroes.
That’s all.
