Kikori no Isekai Tan - Chapter 12
“Well, if you don’t like that shield, there’s also a kite shield for the same price of 4,000 yen. It’s a wooden shield reinforced with iron, though.”
Kikori moved closer to the shield the staff pointed out.
The kite shield…. in other words, a shield shaped like a kite, but the size was quite large.
Flipping it over, he saw it was made of wood, but when he tapped the surface, he realized it was thinly coated with metal.
It did seem like it would provide good protection.
“Are you going to buy it?”
“Hmm…”
The shield would definitely make defense easier, but he couldn’t picture himself fighting with it.
No matter how he thought about it, wouldn’t the shield just get in the way?
“It doesn’t feel right.”
“I thought so. Your weapon is that axe, right? You fight up close. A normal shield will just get in your way. If you had a bigger budget, I’d suggest a better axe, but with what you’ve got, that round shield I showed you earlier is your best bet.”
“You’re not recommending something like armor?”
“Armor’s fine too, but you’d need it adjusted to fit, which means there will be additional fees.”
“Additional fees…”
“Honestly, when it comes to armor, it’s better to not compromise and get something good. Having armor can make you overconfident, and there are plenty of stories about people who died because they put too much faith in their armor.”
“But it’s better than nothing, right?”
“That’s true.”
The staff agreed with a nod. Kikori pondered his options, thinking about what to buy with his current budget, or whether he should not buy anything at all.
He had narrowly escaped death multiple times in just today’s battle alone.
So he wanted some kind of protection, but…
After much consideration, Kikori picked up the round shield that was first recommended to him.
“I’ll take this.”
“Here you go, thank you for your patronage. I told you it doesn’t sell well, but I truly recommend this.”
“I’ll try my best to use it to its full potential.”
“Make sure you get more than your money’s worth out of it.”
The staff said with a smile. Kikori took the shield from the staff and then headed to the inn.
As expected, the 1,000-yen-a-night inn was a large, shared room. Kikori slept in the corner of the room, holding his axe and round shield close.
“Today was… exhausting.”
In the end, he didn’t take any meals, but he was too tired and didn’t feel like eating anything at all.
Just as he was about to sleep like that, he thought a little bit and got up.
If he fell asleep like this, he wouldn’t even notice if someone were to steal his new shield.
In a place where it seemed there were bandits, he couldn’t expect the people staying at a cheap 1,000-yen-a-night inn to have morals.
Kikori took a rope from his bag and tied it securely around his bag, axe, and shield, then tied the other end securely to his arm.
Then, finally, he allowed himself to sleep.
The next morning, Kikori awoke to the sound of chaos as people discovered their belongings had been stolen. “I knew it,” he muttered to himself.
His belongings which he had tied securely to himself weren’t stolen but Kikori decided that he needed to leave this inn as soon as possible.
