Looking Forward to Another World - Chapter 2 : Yuri Frenzel
Outside the door, a voice as light and airy as the wind and as clear as water entered, interrupting Riegel’s reverie.
“I’m awake,” Riegel said, returning to the present. “Come in.”
With that, the door opened.
A girl about the same age as Riegel appeared at the doorway. She wore a dress that allowed easy movement, exuding a noble aura. With her exquisite features, slender figure, and waist-length bright silver hair, she did not seem out of place. Instead, her appearance added to her nobility, lending an air of elegance and making every movement a delight to the eye.
She entered naturally, her mere presence radiating an indescribable beauty that made even a somewhat accustomed Riegel feel the urge to exclaim in admiration. But of course, he refrained.
Watching the girl approach him, a gentle smile appeared on Riegel’s face.
“You’re here again, Miss Yuri,” he greeted.
Yuri Frenzel.
That is her name, the benefactor who had saved Riegel’s life and brought him here. To Riegel, she was just that – a savior.
Would the original owner have been too nervous to speak in her presence? Perhaps, but Riegel, having been informed by the original owner’s memories, knew her status as an unattainable figure. Yet, he felt only gratitude towards her.
Yuri shook her head at his formality, saying, “Just call me Yuri, there’s no need for such politeness.”
Her voice, light and clear as it had been outside the door, was genuinely pleasant to hear. Riegel couldn’t help but think, somewhat impolitely, that with such a voice, it was a pity she wasn’t a singer.
“Seems like you’ve almost fully recovered,” Yuri observed as she sat by Riegel’s bedside. “Can you get out of bed yet?”
“By tomorrow, I should be able to,” Riegel replied, then adding courteously, “Thanks for your care, Miss Yuri. I’ll repay this debt eventually.”
“You don’t need to be so formal,” Yuri sighed. “Your current predicament isn’t entirely unrelated to me. I’m not used to such politeness from you. Wasn’t it better how we interacted at the beginning?”
Maybe recalling those earlier days, Yuri’s mood brightened inexplicably, leaving Riegel slightly at a loss. His attitude back then was far from cordial.
At that time, he had just arrived in this world, waking up to severe pain and injury, with a young girl – Yuri – at his bedside. His initial reaction was naturally filled with hostility and caution. Only later, realizing the extraordinary circumstances he found himself in, he began to see things differently.
Memories from his previous life flowed through his mind, bringing a faint sting of pain.
“Come to think of it, my situation in this world isn’t much different,” Riegel thought to himself, a hint of self-mockery in his thoughts.
Unaware of Riegel’s inner musings, Yuri, seeing his sudden silence, shifted the conversation. “Can’t your (Gate) be repaired?”
It was a change of topic, but the subject Yuri brought up next was perhaps even more sensitive than the previous one.
“No,” Riegel responded calmly. “It seems to be completely ruined, with no signs of recovery. I’ve been strictly advised against using magic.”
“Is that so?” She sounded genuinely regretful.
In this world, the ability to use magic directly determines one’s social status. To use magic, one needed a certain amount of magical power – the fuel for magic. Without it, magic was impossible. Fortunately, everyone here was born with magical power, differing only in quantity. Some had enough for magic use, others did not.
The so-called (Gate) refers to a nerve within the human body with magical properties. It served as a switch, a pathway, a storage for magical power, and the source for wielding magic. Damage to the (Gate) could result in an inability to use magic or even complete loss of stored magical power.
Riegel’s (Gate) was damaged, destroyed by someone’s hand.
“Any leads?” he asked, his tone neither happy nor sad. “Who tried to kill me?”
This was why Riegel was here. He, or rather the original owner of this body, had been mortally wounded a month ago. Riegel had crossed over, rescued by Yuri, and spent a month recuperating in this mansion.
