Chapter 3: Potable Water Crisis! Initial Upgrade!
“Indeed, it’s feasible,” Su Mo thought, relieved to see the second upgrade plan offered by the system. Ignoring the system’s snark, he was filled with excitement. While city wells might be rare, many rural areas still relied on traditional wells until 2022. Ordinarily, well sites are chosen based on topography to accumulate water efficiently. But now, with the survival system, as long as Su Mo could create a model of an item, Survival Points could handle the rest.
He began to study the well’s upgrade plans. If he upgraded without additional materials, it would cost 130 Survival Points. With his current rate of earning five points per day, it would take at least five days to accumulate enough points – too long when facing the threat of dehydration. Waiting for enough Survival Points was clearly not an option.
Then, an idea struck him: “I can provide materials for the upgrade plan.” He quickly identified the materials he could offer for the second plan: ten units of stone and six units of plant fiber.
With renewed vigor, Su Mo stepped out of the shelter to gather resources. After about an hour, he had collected enough materials, reducing the needed Survival Points for the upgrade to 75.
Choosing the second upgrade option, a green scanning light integrated with the pit, which deepened as the wooden barrel descended. The stones disappeared rapidly as they were used up, and when the upgrade was complete, the light returned to Su Mo.
He checked the well’s new attributes:
(Miniature Well Water Extractor (Ordinary))
Current efficiency: 2000 ml/day
Upgrade options:
1. Improve the well material, add sealing and purification functions to improve water quality. This upgrade consumes Survival Points (200).
2. Deepen the well pit to enhance water extraction efficiency. This upgrade consumes Survival Points (300).
Evaluation: Essential for wilderness survival!
With the well now producing two liters of water per day, Su Mo felt relieved. He calculated that minimal activity would require only about 300 ml per day to survive, and even with physical labor, one liter should suffice. The standard recommendation of two liters per day was a luxury in this post-apocalyptic world.
Next, Su Mo needed to address food scarcity. He opened the Trading Panel and found various items on offer, including water, which was scarce and quickly bought whenever available.
After assessing the market situation, Su Mo gained valuable insights. The wilderness was full of dangers and opportunities, with treasure chests from slain mutant beasts offering various rewards. Wild treasure chests scattered in the wilderness could also be found and opened.
In this survival race, everyone was on equal footing. Su Mo, sitting at the shelter’s entrance, waited until sunset before pulling up the bucket, which had accumulated 400 ml of water. He crafted another bucket, transferred the water for sedimentation, and then continued collecting with the original bucket.
Despite his thirst, he decided to trade some of his collected water. Posting an auction on the Trading Panel, he offered 200 ml of underground mineral water in exchange for food.
(Seller: Su Mo)
(Item: 200 ml Underground Mineral Water)
(Requirement: Any Food)
(Note: Freshly extracted underground water, dug for half a day. Seeking food, highest bidder wins.)
His post immediately caused a stir in the chat channel:
“Wow, someone’s trading water they dug up!”
“Underground water? I’m going to dig right now.”
“First time seeing water from digging. Most traded water comes from treasure chests.”
“Can I trade 300 g of bread for your water?”
Many reached out through private messages, offering various items and promises. Among them were celebrities and wealthy individuals, offering riches and even personal favors. Su Mo, however, ignored all these messages.
With the first disaster only five days away, everyone’s survival was uncertain. In this unpredictable world, status and wealth held no power. Su Mo prepared for the imminent challenges, focusing on gathering essentials for survival.
After sifting through offers for about ten minutes, Su Mo finally selected the one that seemed to offer the highest value and completed the trade.
(Record): You lost 200 ml of water.
(Record): You gained 350 g of bread, 200 g of dried beef, an iron, and a lighter.
The transaction resulted in half the water in the wooden barrel disappearing, and several new items appeared in the inventory. Including the resources he had spent earlier, Su Mo was left with only four units of lumber in his inventory.
Deciding on his next move, he used four units of lumber to build a wooden box and stored the newly acquired items in it. He carefully drank the remaining half of the water from the bucket. With some daylight still left, Su Mo stepped out once more.
