- Chapter 16: Mia Hurtig - The Tragedy
Making his way through the cold night, Lake had a think about the message from his system. It was eerie, yet non-sensical.
“The Girl Who Was a Gift From God… that must be some nickname for a person.”
Still, there was no memory that Lake could piece together regarding it.
For some reason, there was a slight tint of orange aura on the edge of his sword.

It was the next morning.
A guard rushed into the executive office of Complex II.
“Commandant Mia! One of them escaped!”
Mia turned around lethargically.
“Alright. Go catch them then.”
“No… we’re not sure where he’s gone.”
The guard was twiddling her fingers, looking around anxiously. Still, it drew little attention from the recently-awake Mia.
“You’ve checked the security cameras?”
“Yes—”
“Was he not on those?”
“H-he was…”
Mia sighed.
“Talk to the head of security. This type of issue isn’t supposed to be brought up with me, you know?”
“No, but they told me to come to you.”
“What?”
There was a hint of confusion on Mia’s face. Raising her posture a little, she focused her attention on the guard. There was a slight squeak as her chair swivelled around.
“It was the boy with the black sword.”
There was a moment of silence.
Anger formed on Mia’s face, however, she eventually composed herself.
“Ah, so he escaped. I guess this is something for me to deal with then.”
The young girl got up.
“Alright, I’ll need you to bring me all the security footage.”
“Do you want me to prepare a search team?”
“There’s no need.”
As the guard left, Mia drew her sword. Running the tip of her finger across the tip of the blade, she smeared the orange-y aura ever-so-slightly into her blood.
[Blood of the Sword God]
In an instant, Mia was able to gain the location of Lake. The residue of the Sword God’s blood is left on anything that Mia’s [Saint’s Broadsword] makes contact with. As such, she is able to locate them, no matter where they are.
“That’s where you are. I’m going to catch you, you little rat.”
A few moments later, the guard returned with security camera footage.
“Here, Commandant Mia.”
“Thank you. Now if Samantha comes looking for me, tell her that I’m going for a little stroll.”
“Yes, Commandant Mia.”
“Thank you. You may leave now.”

In moments, Mia Hurtig was making her way through the streets. Other women flashed past her as she sprinted. There was awe from nearby women as she dashed through the long grass, cutting through the large plains that layered the east side of the city.
The dense sound of boots clattering on dirt echoed through the grassland. Her skirt swayed in the wind and hair fluttered from the breeze.
Lake had made it a significant distance from the complex.
She continued to make her way through the city. Passing the grassy plains, she travelled through a small residential area where some children ran around, playing with racquets and sticks. Despite being one of the strongest soldiers in the city, Mia wasn’t very well-known due to the lack of missions outside of running Complex II.
However, despite all that, there was one person who recognised her.
—in the middle of a poor and deserted area of the city.
“I see you’re doing much better now, Mia.”
She froze.
It was a voice that she recognised quite well.
A woman, dressed in oddly-formal clothing, placed a cigarette into her mouth. Puffing out a little cloud of smoke, she stretched her arms a little. A moment later, she dropped the cigarette to the ground, crushing it with the sole of her shoe.
They laughed a little.
“Now you’re a puppet to the empire.”
…
She continued.
“I wonder, was it worth sacrificing everything?”
…
Mia turned around.
“W-what… are you doing here, Mrs Clarantine…”
She laughed again.
“Come on now, drop the honorific.”
…
Mia took a breath.
“Why did you leave Philistia, Cassa Clarantine?”
…
“Why else, I’m just here to get you back, after all.”
Mia took a few steps back.
“Did my mom send you?”
…
“Does that matter~?”
Mia didn’t respond.
“Oh well. You know that there’s nowhere else that will accept you~”
…
“That’s not true.”
The woman laughed again.
“Philistia is where you belong~”
…
Mia began to draw her sword.
“I’m never going back to my mom.”
The woman took a step back, sighing.
“Killing me won’t achieve anything. You know your mother will get you back—no matter the cost.”
Tears began to fall from Mia’s eyes.
“She killed Sierra. I will never forgive her!”
“You still care about that little dog?”
“Shut up! I’ll kill you.”
…
“Killing me will only make it easier for her to take you back.”
“I swear. I swear. I’m going to kill her. And then I’m going to kill you.”
The woman smiled.
“Don’t worry. I’m sure you’ll come to your senses soon. After all, Philistia is the only place where you belong~. Your mother is already negotiating with the Druryn Kingdom.”
Slowly, Mia placed her sword back into its sheath.
“You’re lucky I’ve got something else on my mind right now. Otherwise I’d kill you.”
“Aha. Good luck then, my star student. Remember, you’re just a little fish in a big ocean.”
Turning her back to the woman, Mia ran off into the distance.
Making her way toward the East border of the Kingdom, Mia quickly approached Lake’s position. He was only able to get so far in the several-hour head-start he had.
However, all that didn’t matter.
A few more minutes passed as she sprinted through the city, into the woodlands.
It wasn’t long before she found Lake.
~
He was simply leaning against a tree, looking down at her with his dark, opal eyes. Like a bright light shining through the forest, he simply looked down at the young girl.
Suddenly, the area area felt dark to Mia.
But the light didn’t change.
Lake’s expression was completely listless—his expression was uncharacteristically cold.
