- Chapter 17: Mia's Break Down
“Did you run out of energy, little rat?”
Lake leaned back against the tree, looking down on the young girl.
“I never had enough energy to outrun you.”
The gentle breeze brushed against the two teenagers as they stared at each other. You could smell the fresh morning dew as its aroma filled the air. The leaves on the tree danced around a little, sifting through the wind.
Mia began to draw her [Saint’s Broadsword].
“Are you planning on fighting me?”
Lake didn’t move.
“I wouldn’t stand a chance.”
Mia laughed.
“It seems you get it. So why did you run away?”
“I guess it was just the spur of the moment.”
“You’re about as smart as you look then.”
Slowly, Mia began to walk toward Lake with her sword drawn. Despite the threat, Lake simply stayed still and watched her approach.
“What’s your plan, rat. You got a secret weapon or something?”
Lake began to take some pieces of paper out from under his shirt.
Suddenly, Mia jolted back.
“What are you doing!”
“I’m just getting something for you.”
She raised her sword.
Lake took out the papers and flattened them a little.
“You might want to take a look at this.”
“What is it.”
“It’ll be easier if you just look at it.”
Mia was still hesitant.
“Drop the papers on the ground and walk back.”
Lake sighed.
“As you wish.”
Giving her some space, Mia began to walk forward and grabbed the documents from the ground. They had been stained by a little bit of dirt despite her shaking them a little. Still keeping her attention on Lake, she slowly began to read it.
As time passed, she quickly grasped the situation.
“What the hell… where did you get this.”
“It was in one of the rooms in the facility.”
There was a moment of silence.
Suddenly, Mia began to laugh.
“Ahaha, so they were just using me then.”
“It would appear so.”
“Shut up. I didn’t talk to you.”
Mia silently pondered the words on the page.
She laughed a little more.
However, slowly, the laugh became more croaky. Her voice began to crack and her eyes began to tear up once again. The tips of her finger shook ever-so-slightly.
“Haa… so they didn’t care about me at all. Well, that’s to be expected, isn’t it?”
It was silent aside from the quiet whistling of the wind.
“Samantha… Brienne… everyone’s the same. Isn’t that funny? They’re just like Mom. I guess everyone just loves to lie to me. I’m just their little toy. Ha…”
After a moment, Mia looked up at Lake.
“What did you expect me to do after reading this? You think I’ll spare you now?”
“No.”
“Then what. Why did you show me this.”
“I guess it’s just out of pity.”
“Ahaha, out of pity… isn’t that nice… pity from a lesser creature.”
Lake took a seat on the ground.
“So, what are you going to do now, Mia Hurtig.”
“I’m going to capture you and experiment on you, rat.”
…
“Even though we’re the same?”
“Don’t you dare say we’re the same. You’re a disgusting man. You’re below me. I’m smarter than you. I’m stronger than you….”
“We’re both lab rats.”
“Shut up! I’m not a lab rat! This is probably something they’re doing because they care about me!”
“Are you really going to lie to yourself like that.”
…
“I said shut up. One more word and I’ll kill you right here.”
Suddenly, Mia tore up all the papers, leaving shreds all over the ground. Only a few moments later, a gust of wind came over to lift them all off the dirt. Floating through the air, they eventually disappeared into the distance.
“This doesn’t change anything regarding what I’m going to do to you.”
“What’s the point of capturing me now.”
“The point is that you’re a man. You’re supposed to live in a cage.”
“We both live in a cage, do we not? We’re both lab rats locked up in a cage.”
Mia swung her sword.
Crash.
Barely avoiding the attack, Lake looked up to see that the tree behind him had collapsed. Its leaves spread all over the ground, letting light fill its previous shadow.
“Don’t you want to leave this city?”
“What’s the point in leaving?! No matter where I go, it’s just people lying to me, everywhere. What’s the even the point?!”
“It’s your fault.”
Mia looked up in shock.
“My fault? How is it my fault?!”
“You’re a child. You crave independence yet you still seek validation from others.”
“That’s bullshit!”
“When you found out about my sword form, why did you get the guard to report to your superior?”
“She’s not my superior! She’s just a supervisor, and I reported to her because that’s what I have to do!”
“Regardless, there’s one big reason you’re so easy to manipulate.”
“What.”
“It’s because you’re too easy to read.”
“What do you mean.”
“You’re a child. Your intentions are written all over your face. If you show people what you want, they’ll use it against you. You’re a useful tool. They all know that—so they’re willing to give you what you want—”
“Shut up. Shut up. Shut up!”
“Mia, you’re immature.”
Charging toward Lake, Mia quickly swung her [Saint’s Broadsword]. Filled with anger, she put all her strength into her swing.
“Eastern Style: Gros Variation – Ninth Sword!”
“The same atta—”
Her sword slashed through the air.
However, it cut nothing.
Grabbing her by the neck, Lake pinned her down to the ground. There was a thump as she broke her fall with her arms.
“See, you let your emotions take over.”
“Get off me!”
She swung her arm. Lake quickly leapt back to avoid it.
Slowly, she pulled herself off the ground.
“I swear. All of you people looking down on me. All of you treating me like a child… I’ve had enough. I’ve actually had enough.”
…
“I’ve got an idea for you.”
