- Chapter 7 - Newlywed (Temporary) Life [3]
After unpacking my belongings, I worked in my room.
The sun was setting, and orange light was shining through the window. If I had unpacked the shared items, I wouldn’t have had time to work.
“I should be grateful to Renge. It’s a bit irritating, but I have to admit it.”
Muttering to myself, I checked the documents displayed on the computer screen and typed away on the keyboard.
Knock, knock.
That’s when I heard a knock.
“Thank you.”
“You’re welcome.”
When I stopped typing and turned around, Renge came into the room with a tray in her hand. On the tray was a glass filled with a purple liquid.
“I’ve brought you a drink. I thought you might be tired from work, so I made a vinegar drink that’s good for fatigue recovery,” Renge said. [1]
Renge smiled warmly and offered me the glass.
I widened my eyes as I accepted the glass.
“Doing the unpacking and even preparing a drink as an offering… You don’t have to go that far, you know? It must have been quite a task, right?”
“Hidetsugu-kun, you’re still working even though you’ve just finished unpacking.”
“I’m inheriting the Yamabuki Group, so it’s only natural. I can’t afford to complain.”
“Well, I’ll become your wife, so it’s only natural for me to take care of things. Well, I’m not suffering, so there’s no need to complain.”
“Well, aren’t you tired? In addition to your own stuff, you’re also unpacking the shared stuff, right?”
“That’s why I’m not tired at all. I’m sure it’s the power of love.”
“I see. If you can afford to joke, then you must not be tired.”
“I’m not kidding. I’m serious.”
“Yes, yes”
When I responded casually, Renge pouted with a dissatisfied “hmph.” Even such a gesture looked cute, indicating Renge’s considerable level of cuteness.
Even so, why does Renge do all this work?
Renge had declared that she would handle not only the shared unpacking and bringing drinks but also all the household chores on her own. Despite being engaged and aspiring to be an ideal wife, it was puzzling to me why she would go this far for someone like me, with whom she had no prior interaction.
I try to think about it, but I have no idea why. So I decided to ask Renge directly.
“Renge, why are you willing to go to such lengths? You are certainly going to be my wife, but that alone is not a reason for you to devote yourself to me, is it?”
“It’s a secret for now.”
“Secret?”
The answer I received was nonsensical. I frowned.
Renge quietly lowered her eyelids and continued.
“Now is not the time to confess. Even if I tell you, I don’t think Hidetsugu-kun will believe me.”
“That’s a meaningful statement…Will you open up to me someday?”
“Of course.”
“Does that mean that the day will come when I can believe your confession?”
“Yes. To be more precise, I’ll try to make you believe my confession, though.”
Renge gives me a smile that feels more confident than usual.
I may be curious about what it means, but I’m not so rude as to try to pry out what she’s keeping a secret. I’ll patiently wait for the day she decides to confide in me.
I took a deep breath and looked at the glass that was handed to me.
To tell you the truth, I don’t like sour things. I’ve had vinegar drinks before, but I remember wincing at the sharp, sour taste.
However, I can’t afford to neglect this consideration.
After hesitating with my lips pressed into a straight line, I mustered my courage and timidly took a sip from the glass, letting just a tiny bit of the vinegar drink touch my lips.
The flavor of grapes hits your nose. Along with the sweetness, naturally, the sourness spreads on the tongue.
But――
“It’s actually easier to drink than I imagined. It’s not tangy at all.”
“I thought the acidity was a bit too sharp as it was, so I added honey. This way, the sweetness of the honey balances out the acidity.”
Renge told me with a smile on her face.
It’s a bit surprising how she can be playful yet attentive to details like that.
I’m secretly impressed. However, I have no intention of telling that to Renge. I don’t want her to get too carried away.
[1]. I thought I translated it wrong since it’s my first time hearing of it but apparently, vinegar drink is indeed a thing. It’s made while using apple cider vinegar. If you’re curious, you can check this out! https://www.webmd.com/diet/apple-cider-vinegar-and-your-health
[T/N]: Exams came so I had to focus on it + there were a lot of requirements that I need to comply for the exams which is why I was unable to post new updates. I’ll make sure to catch up with the delayed chapters after our exams~
