- The Most Beautiful Girl in School Who Got Engaged is Devoted to Her Marriage Even Though it was a Political Marriage
- Chapter 8 - Newlywed (Temporary) Life [4]
“Did Renge make all of this?”
There were so many dishes lined up on the dining table that you wouldn’t expect to see in a normal meal.
There’s pork ginger stir-fry, yellowtail with grated daikon radish, white stew, croquettes, mapo tofu, and even a green salad that appears to be nutritionally balanced. There’s also a piping hot sundubu jjigae. Since we just moved, they must have gone shopping. It’s an impressive variety of dishes, almost to the point of being impossible given the time.
As I stood still in shock, Renge smiled and nodded.
“Yes. They say that the beginning is the most important thing, so I tried my best during the first day. I wasn’t sure what Hidetsugu-kun would like, so I made quiet a lot of dishes that I can make.”
“I-is it okay?”
“I think it’s okay, right? Since there are so many items, the portions of each item are small, so I’m sure you’ll be able to finish it all.”
“That’s not what I meant.”
It seemed that Renge had interpreted my concern as “Can you eat all this food?” But that wasn’t what I wanted to convey. I shook my head and tried to tell what I was really thinking to Renge.
“It must have taken a lot of effort to make this many items. I’m worried about whether you’re tired or not.”
“As I said when I visited your room earlier, I’m completely fine. I’m not tired at all because of the power of love.”
“There is a part of me that is a little bit annoyed, but for now, I’ll set them aside. Even if you’re not tired, you don’t have to be so considerate to this extent, you know?”
“Hehe, Hidetsugu-kun is so kind.”
“You don’t want to listen to me, do you?”
I try to give her a stern look, but Renge just continues to smile as if saying, “Well, what are you talking about?”
No matter how many times I say, “You don’t have to do this,” Renge refuses to budge, skillfully diverting the conversation away from the point. Regardless of what I say, Renge seems determined to take care of almost everything.
Pushing against this determined resolve seems futile. It seems like any further words would be in vain.
With a sigh of resignation, I sit down on a chair. The food will get cold if I don’t eat now. It would be rude of me to do that because Renge took a lot of efforts to cook all of them.
As if sensing my intentions, Renge sat down on the chair opposite me.
“Let’s eat.”
“Yes, please enjoy your meal.”
With her hands clasped together, Renge gently smiled at me.
With so many dishes, it’s hard to decide which one to start with… maybe I’ll start with my favorites.
I reached out with my chopsticks for the ginger-grilled pork.
The pork loin is beautifully seared, giving it a deliciously crispy appearance, and the aroma of the sauce is tantalizing. I haven’t even taken a bite yet, but my mouth is already watering.
I take a bite of the ginger pork, and immediately, the strong flavors of ginger and garlic immediately assaulted my taste buds.
Continuing, the savory goodness of the pork and the sweet-salty sauce delight my taste buds. I can’t resist this, and I dig into the rice without hesitation.
Chewing and savoring each bite, I gulp it down, releasing a contented sigh of bliss.
“Delicious.”
“Hehe, thank you for your wonderful feedback.”
Her expression clearly showed that she was genuinely delighted by what I’ve said.
“I wanted Hidetsugu-kun to think it was delicious, so I’m glad that my wish came true.”
“You’re exaggerating.”
“I’m not exaggerating. It was the most important thing to me.”
Normally, she would have been embarrassed to say these words, but Renge said them calmly.
Come on, show a little embarrassment. If you say it so confidently, I’ll end up feeling embarrassed instead.
I grumbled to myself as I felt my cheeks burn.
While scratching my cheek as if to hide my embarrassment, Renge continued, “That’s why…”
“Could you tell me what you like, Hidetsugu-kun?”
“Why?”
“I told you, right? It’s more important to me that Hidetsugu-kun thinks it’s delicious. That’s why.”
Looking at me with her sapphire eyes, Renge asks earnestly.
“I want to know what Hidetsugu-kun likes. I want to know more about you.”
Seriously, how can you say that so casually?!
Not only my cheeks, but my whole body felt hot. My wife (tentative) keeps on saying embarrassing things so casually.
I can’t look directly at Renge’s face. After tightly closing my lips and turning away, I respond.
“…My favorite dishes are Western and Chinese cuisine, especially pork ginger stir-fry. I prefer a slightly strong and flavorful seasoning with a punch, and this ginger stir-fry hit the mark.”
“Thank you very much. I am happy.”
“The ingredient I don’t like is pickled plums. I don’t like sour things.”
“Huh? In that case, you didn’t like the vinegar drink from earlier?”
Apologizing, Renge furrows her brow. I reassure her, saying, “No,” to alleviate her anxiety.
“I didn’t mind it because the acidity wasn’t too sharp. It was thanks to you adding honey. I appreciated that thoughtfulness.”
“If that’s the case, I’m glad.”
Renge breathed a sigh of relief. She must have genuinely been worried. It felt a bit embarrassing, to be honest.
After listening to me, Renge clasps her hands on her chest as if to cheer herself up.
“Thank you for letting me know. I will continue to make dishes that Hidetsugu-kun would find delicious.”
“I’m grateful.”
After saying that, I added, “Just.”
“There’s something I want to tell you.”
“What is it?”
“You don’t have to make only the things I like.”
When I told her that, Renge tilted her head. It seems like she didn’t understand what I meant.
I wish she could have understood it if she could, but if it didn’t get through to her, there’s nothing I can do about it.
I scratched my head in embarrassment and spoke again.
“It wouldn’t be fun if only I enjoyed it. It’s important that you also find it delicious. After all, we’re, umm… living together, right?.”
When I told her that, Renge blinked her eyes and started giggling.
“W-what’s wrong?”
“No, it’s just that you made me happy, so…”
“I’m not being all lovey-dovey!”
Despite my insistence, Renge’s pleased smile didn’t waver.
I didn’t want to say it because I thought you’d get carried away like this. I wanted you to understand without me having to say it.
Honestly, being with Renge throws me off balance.
