- Episode 1: The Old Man Gets Fired from the Streaming Guild
“Hey everyone, it’s Aserus, the Guild Master of ‘Blazing Serpent’! Are you all watching? Today’s stream is ‘Firing the Useless Old Man!'”
In the guild office of ‘Blazing Serpent’ located in a corner of the royal capital of Graham…
Guild Master Aserus Lowbish had a sly grin on his face.
“Guild Master! What is the meaning of this!?”
“What’s the meaning? It means exactly what I said. You’re ‘fired’ as of today.”
Standing in front of Aserus was a man named Gosh Crossner, a middle-aged member of the guild ‘Blazing Serpent.’
“Suddenly firing me… What on earth have I done!?”
“Hey, don’t get all worked up. It’s disrespectful to the viewers watching the stream, you know?”
Aserus scoffed and pointed to an empty space, where a translucent image was projected, displaying a stream of text.
This world had been revolutionized by a technology that had become commonplace – “video streaming.”
Fifty years ago…
Wars between nations had long ceased, and aside from occasional appearances of monsters, the world had become peaceful. In this world, there existed a form of magic known as “Communication Magic” which utilized tiny spirits called “micro-sprites” that could relay messages even across great distances.
Then, one great sage made a groundbreaking discovery.
“If voices can be transmitted, then why not visual information?” And so, the great sage established the theory, and just like the previous Communication Magic, it became something anyone could use.
This led to the spread of the technology known as “video streaming,” allowing people to transmit both audio and visual information to distant locations.
In the present day, this technology has become an integral part of people’s lives, with the Guild Master Aserus participating in one such video stream.
“Now, as I was saying, I saw it! I saw him stealing the guild’s money!”
“Huh…?”
The male guild member pointed at Gosh, who involuntarily let out a sound of surprise. He had no recollection of such an event.
The guild member detailed the situation, accusing Gosh of theft, as if reading from a script.
As Gosh stood bewildered, a flood of text filled the surroundings. These were comments from viewers watching the stream via “FairyTube.”
[Hey, is this for real?]
[Embezzlement, huh?]
[This old man is the worst.]
[Shouldn’t we just fire him?]
[↑ That’s exactly what Aserus said, right?]
[Caught red-handed! Haha, serves you right!]
“Wait a minute! I didn’t do any of this—”
“I was touched inappropriately every day! Even though I told them to stop, it kept happening. I was really scared…”
Gosh’s words were interrupted by the testimony of a female guild member. Once again, this was an entirely unfamiliar situation for Gosh.
[Ugh, this is the worst.]
[Is firing him enough?]
[Old man, you’re flustered, it’s hilarious!]
[This guy looks like a criminal.]
[Let’s report him.]
[Aserus, you’re cool for handling it with just a firing!]
Gosh tried to protest, but he was met with accusations and condemnations, with his words falling on deaf ears.
“As I was saying. I staged it a bit… but you’ve been dead weight for the guild. You’re fired, effective today.”
“Wait! Even for monster hunts, I—”
“Shut up!”
Aserus gave a dismissive remark and kicked Gosh in the stomach.
“Oops, maybe I should’ve streamed that.”
While saying such things, Aserus looked smug.
Though Gosh had taken a certain defensive posture that ensured he hardly felt the impact, Aserus and the guild members were oblivious to this fact.
Gosh had secretly learned an ancient martial art through a certain video stream, a defensive technique called “Float.”
He intentionally jumped backward to lessen the force, and Aserus and the guild members believed he had been blown away.
“Hey, you know? Video streaming is now a cultural phenomenon worldwide. If you gather viewers through streaming, you can earn money and fame. And even get fans… especially female ones, if that’s your thing.”
“…But you know, there are so many people streaming these days. You’ve got to outdo them to rise up. And leaving a guy like you, who doesn’t seem to contribute much to the view count, would be a liability for the guild.”
Aserus stated matter-of-factly.
Whether his values and arguments were right or wrong, there was one crucial point on which he was entirely mistaken.
But Aserus wouldn’t realize that until later…
“Well, I’ve finally gotten rid of that dead weight.”
“Oh, Guild Master, you’re too kind. You could have kicked him out sooner.”
“Well, you know, nowadays, if you unfairly fire someone, the authorities start going on about unjust termination. Just being cautious, you know?”
Since Gosh left the guild…
Aserus and the guild members chuckled while reflecting on the situation.
“Well, for a stream like that to work, the world must be coming to an end.”
“Absolutely. Back in the day, we used to do more serious adventure streams.”
“That’s right. The youth these days are lazy. They lack passion.”
However, Gosh’s departure from the guild had led to something he hadn’t expected.
But more on that later…
“Anyway, it’s about time you leave. Or do you want me to kick you again?”
Gosh, with a mixture of resignation and determination, tried to exit the guild office.
“But…”
“Hmm?”
Just as Gosh was leaving, he spoke up.
Hearing his words, Aserus furrowed his brows, displeased.
“But I believe… Video streaming is something that brings happiness to people. Someone who taught me that was very dear to me.”
Those were Gosh’s final words left with the guild ‘Blazing Serpent’.
“Finally got rid of that old baggage.”
“Oh, Guild Master, you’re too good-hearted. You could’ve gotten rid of him sooner.”
“Well, well, these days, firing someone too abruptly leads to accusations of being high-handed by the higher-ups. Just being cautious.”
