- Chapter 2 — (Junk) and (Extreme) and occasionally swordsman
I remember that on my way to work, I saved someone and ended up dying.
Dying … What does it feel like?
I was thinking something like that while my consciousness was growing dim … and the next moment I was in a completely different place, still conscious.
There, I met a being that called itself God.
According to them, the child I saved should have died there. And because he was interested in me, the person who overturned that fate, he summoned my soul after death.
As a reward for surprising them, God rewarded me with the chance to live again in another world and the ability to stay alive there.
… I thought it was a bit unsophisticated that the power I got was drawing the lottery but …
“… I can live as I see fit, huh?”
Then one day … or rather, when I woke up, I found myself in the middle of a forest. It was the type of situation when one suddenly got kidnapped and then left in the middle of a forest with no explanation whatsoever.
“For now, I’ll check out the pool place and then … I’ll try to find an inhabited place before nightfall.”
The power given to me by God and minimum knowledge about this world. And the equipment and funds needed to establish a livelihood in the city.
After taking a look around and confirming that there were no dangerous-looking creatures, I opened the backpack that had fallen next to me.
“Uhh, just this m— … No. I have to be grateful for even this much. It would have been no laughing matter should I have been penniless.”
Thankfully, the backpack contained a coin pouch filled with silver coins, probably the money of this world. The palm-sized bag was half filled with silver coins.
“I’ll find out their worth after meeting with some people … Next is … Are these clothes? No, that’s not right.”
There was something that looked like cloth, but when I picked it up and unfolded it, I realized that it wasn’t a change of clothes, but a large piece of cloth.
It must have been a robe or something since it had a hood-like portion and strings attached.
“…At least it’s nice to have something to keep rain and wind out.”
Setting aside the robe, I peeked inside the backpack.
Placed first in were a smallish knife and four small bottles containing some kind of green liquid. And a book.
A book?
When I picked it up and looked at the title, it said, “Fun space magic that even monkeys can understand”.
“… I’m thankful but … why monkeys?”
I opened the book thinking that I didn’t get neither God’s sensibilities nor his face — which I couldn’t see due to his halo. Thankfully, I was able to quickly grasp what it was saying since the content was easier to understand than I expected.
The world I was reincarnated into was a fantasy world of swords and magic, infested with dangerous creatures called “monsters” that attack people.
I had received such an explanation before being reincarnated, and, of course, I was by no means strong enough to survive in such a dangerous world.
That’s why, the powers I obtained thanks to the lottery — the so-called cheats — are the following three.
The first one, swordsmanship talent (Medium).
He’s an incredible swordsman!! — that’s the impression it … doesn’t give since the (Medium) note attached says that the owner of the talent could, at most, become stronger than the average person. And that only if they put in the effort!
The second talent is the ability to use the four types of elemental magic (Junk).
… Leaving aside the name (Junk), it seems I’ve gotten myself a talent to handle the basic magical attributes of this world, namely fire, water, wind and earth. However, just as the word (Junk) suggests, I can only use the absolute basics. For example, I could light up a fire or create drinkable water but nothing fancier than that.
Still, since it seems that most people in this world can’t use magic at all, I think it might be good to have it — this talent — rather than not.
And now the third talent. Among all the abilities I was awarded with, this one is probably— … no. Among the abilities I was awarded with, this one is indubitably the CHEAT.
The talent for space magic (Extreme).
Not falling under any of the four basic magical attributes of this world, it seems to be a special attribute.
It is said that there are records about its existence a long time ago and that there are items that let one make use of this magical attribute, but that’s about all the currently available information.
“Looking at it again, it’s pretty incredible …”
As I kept reading through the contents of the book, I couldn’t help exclaiming.
In addition to seemingly useful magic such as [Transfer], there are also some dangerous-sounding ones such as [Rupture] and [Compression].
“… Hm. Is this perhaps … maybe … a chance to—”
While reading the book about space magic, an idea started to form inside my mind.
“—stand out by acting the role of a mysterious wizard!?”
While he usually seems to be just an ordinary person, he is the strongest character who is very active behind the scenes — as someone who used to love such characters, I would love to do something similar!
If everything goes well, I’d get the chance to sit in the corner of a bar and listen to the stories and rumors about my super powerful persona while grinning knowingly!
Given my longing for such an ideal, the power given to me can be said to be exactly the kind of power I was looking for!
Usually playing the role of a swordsman, but behind the scenes I’ll hide my true identity and act as a mysterious wizard!
Using magic to help the ones in a pinch, and then enjoying a drink while listening to them say things like, “Just who the hell was that?” and “What kind of power does he have…?”
… That sounds really nice …or rather! Isn’t that the best!?
It may be a point of concern that it is not my own power having been gifted with it, but, at the end of the day, it’s just a talent. My efforts are essential to mastering it.
“For now, I should make sure I can use it to some extent.”
I’m right in the middle of a secluded forest — the perfect place for trying out magic.
Fortunately, the use of magic is also described in “Fun Space Magic That Even Monkeys Can Understand”.
Although it won’t be until the sun goes down, I’d like to learn some of the spells listed in the book.
“Do your best, me! Become the space wizard you’ve been longing for …!”
————-
“[Rupture]!”
When I swung down my hand while using said magic, the tree in front of me slid off from the diagonal cut around its middle.
Pretty much like a makiwara being cut by a katana, the straight cut started to turn into a gap and then the tree collapsed under its own weight.
“Nice! That makes it the fourth one I’ve managed to learn …!”
With sweat dripping down my forehead, I struck a triumphant pose.
How many hours have passed since I was reincarnated, I wonder? The sun, which was still low a moment ago, is now high in the sky.
According to my knowledge, the rotation of the sun and the passage of time are the same as in my previous life. Since that’s the case, it should be okay to consider that it’s about noon now.
“But … to be able to learn so much in such a short time … (Extreme) rated talents are quite something …”
Although I had a hard time with the first spell, once I learned the feeling of using space magic, the rest was a breeze.
Even while being somehow clumsy, I still managed to learn four spells — [Transfer], [Separation], [Rupture] and [Expansion].
There are other spells mentioned in the book, but I’ll memorize them gradually.
“[Transfer] works everywhere in my line of sight, but for long distances, only to places I’ve been to …”
Visibility is poor in the forest, and since I just reincarnated, I don’t know any other place but this forest.
“To anywhere where people can be found!”
When I shouted and tried to teleport under such vague conditions, as expected, the spell failed to activate. According to the book, it’s a spell that allows one to travel instantly by clearly imagining a place they’ve been to in their mind, but if the image is vague, [Transfer] won’t even activate.
Unfortunately, it takes some time to activate even when moving within sight, so it probably cannot be used instantly at this stage.
When I master it, it would be nice to transfer to the opponent’s back in a fight while avoiding their attack and then say something like “It was an afterimage!”
Regarding the latter two, [Separation] is a defensive spell that separates designated spaces and [Expansion] expands the specified space — very much like a four dimensional space pocket.
“Learning this much should get me out of this forest, right? … Right?”
Even though I was a little worried, I stood up and put on my backpack.
“Hm?”
Just as I was about to start walking, I saw a two-handed sword and the bare minimum of armor for hands, legs and chest placed on a nearby tree.
I wonder if it was a farewell gift or something for having been given the swordsmanship talent.
… Throughout.
Well, I’m grateful no matter what — I quickly placed them away in my backpack, which had its capacity increased through [Expansion].
I can intuitively know what’s inside it, how much it contains, and what the limit is, so I don’t have to worry about putting something inside and then forgetting about it.
… If possible, I’d have liked to have them displayed as a list like in a game, but I can’t ask for that much.
“Well, I guess I’ll look for a city before nightfall … huh?”
As I stopped and took a look around, trying to figure out which way I should go to get out of the forest, I suddenly heard a commotion in the depths of the forest.
It sounded like a beast, but it had such a terrifying voice that it seemed like it could evoke fear from the very core of one’s body.
And mixed with the howls of the beast … fait human voices.
“… Should I go …?”
I lightly pinched my frozen legs, encouraging them to move once more, and, before I knew it … I was running towards the source of the commotion.
… Though it’s quite hard to run in a forest!
