- Chapter 1 Reincarnation of the Villain
Eugram Albain Kushana.
“I can’t believe I’ve been reincarnated as Yugglum…” I muttered to myself in my room. The moonlight streaming in from the window faintly illuminated me. In the reflected mirror, I saw a face that left no room for doubt. It was the face of Yugglum Albein Cushana.
“I can’t accept this… There’s no way…” I had been reincarnated into this world. I hardly remembered anything from my previous life. The only vivid memories were the contents of the novel that served as the foundation for this world and the memories associated with Yugglum, the villain and final boss.
According to that, if I followed the script as is, I would undoubtedly be killed. Killed by Iris and her companions. Yugglum was the worst of the worst, an emperor in the making. He treated others as tools to be used and discarded. No one would come to his aid. He would remain isolated and lonely, yet he would never stop his fight. And then, he would be killed. That was Yugglum’s fate. But…
“It’s impossible, isn’t it? To just accept a future like that.” I, myself, quite liked this world—the content of the novel. Seeing that bastard Yugglum getting his comeuppance in the end was so satisfying. But becoming the one who gets his comeuppance? That wasn’t in my plans. I’m in a fantasy world brimming with adventure, and yet, I’m a character doomed to a bad ending from the start. What should I do…?
“Maybe I can somehow avoid the war and focus on domestic affairs? No, that’s not possible. The upper echelons of the empire are already quite corrupt, and they’re preparing for war internally. Besides, even my parents have that villainous vibe…” Currently, Yugglum is just 15 years old. In the original story, he becomes emperor at the earliest about 10 years later, so there’s plenty of time. But the war with the kingdom isn’t too far in the future. It might start in just 2 or 3 years, even sooner.
Once the war starts, I’ll just tumble toward that bad ending as Yugglum. Even if I were to crush the kingdom’s forces with all my might and achieve victory, it wouldn’t be great if the corrupt empire ultimately came to power. The empire itself might become a powder keg and lead to assassinations and such.
“In that case… escaping is the best option.” The last solution that came to mind was defection. If I, the empire’s most powerful force, were to disappear, there would be no one left to challenge Iris on her own. Even without me, the empire was destined to lose to Iris and the kingdom’s forces.
So, I decided that I would defect to the kingdom from the start, sell information, and try to live a normal life. Nice idea, isn’t it? Ethics? Conscience? I don’t really know about those things right after being reincarnated. I decided to leave everything behind in the empire, including those matters. I started my preparations immediately.
Weapons – check. Food – check. Drinks – check. Clothing – check. Disguise mask – check! You see, I’m one of the only two Chosen Ones in the world, and I need the mask to conceal my distinctive golden eyes, a mark of my status.
With the mask securely fastened, I opened the window. Even though I had no attachment to this world right after being reincarnated, the thought of the uncertain future ahead made me slightly nervous. But I steeled my resolve.
“I will survive, no matter what it takes.” I jumped out of the window. Landing on the ground, I immediately started running, leaving the palace and heading into the city.
As I etched the image of the quiet imperial landscape into my memory, I passed through the main gate, concealed by the darkness. Beyond that point lay the vast wilderness leading to the capital city. There were monsters outside, as befitting a different world. Nevertheless, I ran without hesitation. I wouldn’t look back again.
